SD, Like every where else pigs are very adaptable. Zach shot that hog at 8500 ft elevation or maybe higher. They eat grass, roots, scavenge carcasses, tubers, worms and grubs.

They are rooting up everything and are not considered game animals out here at all. Same class as coyotes, skunks.

It is like anywhere else that has public land hunting. These hogs get hunted by dogs as well as lots of houndsmen work these mountains so they are always on their toes.

Hogs at 8,500 feet. I would have never thought they would be that high.

Congrats.

Have you ever heard of any in Unit 52? I drew this year for deer and elk but would love a chance encounter with a pig...sorta like college.

Beachhunter, have not heard of hogs up there. 52 is a great antelope unit just south of Antonito CO. Have not drawn it in 4 years though.

Way to go Dad... get them started young. I'm interested in getting my 9 year old daughter a .243 and I'm curious how your son handles it. Well, obviously he shoots it well, how did you start him out?

daddy63,

He started at 8 years old. Last year he got a mule deer buck with a .270 shooting it off of a tripod i carry for him with a shooting "V" on top. And he shot a Javelina with a 7mm08 also off of the same tripod in SW NM early this year during a youth hunt.

I recomend taking advantage of the youth hunts that most states offer. My oldest son took advantage of the youth hunts in CA and got a antelope and 2 deer out of D19 during youth hunts. Crowds are way down and normally the dates are better than regular hunts.

Paulc,

Thanks for the info. I agree about the youth hunts. I'm trying my boys luck on them too. Thanks and take care.

Congrats! I can't wait for my son to take his first boar or buck (neither can he, and he only 4).
