Youth Pheasant Hunt and Clinic
MDC
1/8/03
Area hunters between the ages of 11 and 15 will have an opportunity to participate in the Youth Pheasant Hunt and Clinic. The hunt and clinic will be sponsored by the Heartland Chapter of Pheasants Forever, the Kansas Area Chapter of Quail Unlimited, the Truman Lake Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The event will be held on March 22, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Frye’s Pheasants, 804 NW Hwy O, Blairstown, Missouri.
"This youth clinic and hunt is a great time to introduce new hunters to the sport of pheasant hunting," stated Lin Kozlowski, Wildlife Management Biologist with the MDC. Along with the pheasant hunt, participants will learn about wildlife conservation, dog handling, and will be able to hone their marksmanship skills shooting sporting clays. There will be special emphasis on safety, ethics, sportsmanship, and hunting traditions.
Kozlowski said that Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation are "great co-sponsors of this event." Pheasants Forever is a nonprofit conservation organization founded in 1982 in response to the decline of ringneck pheasant population. They are dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasant and other wildlife populations in North America throughout habitat improvement, land management, public awareness, and education. Such efforts benefit landowners and wildlife alike. Quail Unlimited was established in 1981 to battle the problem of dwindling quail and wildlife habitat. Quail Unlimited, Inc. is the only national, non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the wise management of America's wild quail as a valuable and renewable resource. Since 1985, more than $168 million NWTF and cooperator dollars have been spent on over 22,000 projects benefiting wild turkeys and other game and nongame species throughout North America. Hunters have also benefited as the NWTF has worked tirelessly to support our hunting heritage and protect and promote laws that increase hunting opportunity and safety.0
Participants must register for the Youth Pheasant Hunt and Clinic by March 12, 2003. The event is free, but a $15.00 deposit is required at the time of registration. The deposit will be returned to the participant on the morning of the clinic. Each youth hunter is required to have successfully completed a Hunter Education Certification Course. They should have their own shotgun and ammunition. Hunters must be accompanied by an adult sponsor at the hunt. Each adult may sponsor up to two youth hunters. The number of hunters will be limited, with preference given to first time pheasant hunters.
To receive more information or to register for the Youth Pheasant Hunt and Clinic, contact the Missouri Department of Conservation, Clinton Office, 2010 S. Second, Clinton, or call 660-885-6981.
