Youth Turkey Season

By Conservation Agent Michael Suttmoeller

JEFFERSON CITY -- Anyone who has been in the woods near daylight may have already heard some turkeys gobbling. The onset of gobbling activity can only mean that the spring turkey hunting seasons are right around the corner. The first one to arrive will be the Youth Spring Turkey Hunting Season. It will be held on March 31-April 1, 2007. The limit for this season is one turkey with a visible beard.

The Youth Spring Turkey Hunting Season is open to Missouri residents who are fifteen years of age or younger on opening day. Several permits are valid for the youth season. They are the Youth Deer and Turkey Hunting Permit, the Resident Spring Turkey Hunting Permit and the Resident Landowner Spring Turkey Hunting Permit.

The Youth Deer and Turkey Hunting Permit is for youths aged 6-15 who is not hunter education certified. Because the hunter education requirement is waived for this permit, youths hunting on this permit must be in the immediate presence of a properly licensed hunter education certified adult. The adult must be hunter education certified regardless of their age. Even if an adult would normally be exempt from the hunter education requirement, they must be certified to take a youth on this permit.

The only exception is for resident landowners accompanying a youth on the landowner’s property. This permit allows the youth hunter to harvest one turkey with a visible beard. If the young hunter does not fill this permit during the youth season, it is valid for the regular season.

Youths who are hunter education certified may hunt on a Resident Spring Turkey Hunting Permit or a Resident Landowner Spring Turkey Hunting Permit. These permits allow the young hunter to harvest a turkey with a visible beard during the youth season. If a hunter harvests a turkey during the youth season, they must wait until the second week of the regular season before hunting again.

Regardless of which permit a young hunter is using, each hunter must have a shotgun that will not hold more than three shells in the chamber and magazine combined. Hunters may not use electronic calls or hunt over bait. Each hunter must also have a "Be Safe" sticker attached to the receiver of their firearm.

All turkeys must be immediately tagged and checked before 10 p.m. utilizing the telecheck system. Please refer to page 7 of the 2007 Spring Turkey Hunting Information pamphlet for telecheck instructions.
