Just got back and I am beat. It was a solo backpack hunt at around 12,000 feet elevation, above treeline. I had 5 days to scout. The herd bulls would not come in to my bugles and calls, but satelite bulls would. I packed into the first canyon I scouted the day before opener. I spotted three herds from a good vantage point. Two across the canyon met that evening, and what I thought was the better bull lost the fight and his cows. I actually thought a slightly better bull was on my side of the canyon, and planned to hunt him opening morning. I was woken to bugles nearby opening morning, so just got my stuff together and went for it. Turns out the winner bull and his harem of over 50 cows dropped down near my camp. I closed the disance as quick as possible, not easy with minimal cover. I got to within 70 yards of where the cows were coming through, and set up. Finally, he came through and gave me a good shot. I only got to hunt about 45 minutes and ther real work started. The picture sucks, because he fell in a hole. At least that sounds better than calling myself ugly. Plus the hole he was in made boning him out more work. Oh well, the aches now will make the memories sweeter.
