Here is my story. First afternoon Chop points me to an area and I start still hunting a ridge trying to keep the wind in my face and come to a saddle. I ease over a small rock outcropping and to my amazement
<
there is a
<
feeding toward me just 30 minutes into the hunt! I quickly go to one knee, nock an arrow, use the rangefinder, only 28 yards and hope for some

and calm nerves, know if he would just step out from that bush into the open lane. I'm ready and waiting, then in an instant a snort and are off, I then notice a second boar running away too.
<
Wind must have calmed down and swirled and gave me away. Man they have good noses!

2nd day morning was spend spot and stalk hunting with lots of miles and elevation taken and time taken to glass the beautiful countryside, but no hogs spotted. I ran out of water and headed back to the truck for supplies and a new area to hunt for the afternoon. Hiked up above some chemise hillsides for lunch an a nap, and by 3 was ready to move to another hillside. Got just off and away and looked back to where I was, and there stands a black boar just 40 yards down in the chemise from where I took my nap. Go back and crawl in aways with my bow and start listening. I can hear him but what am I thinking. No chance of getting a shot off in here! Some clouds roll in and that causes the thermals to stall and push my scent down to the pig and the rest is history. I head down and around to bottom of the hillside, with the wind at my back...
<
of course that is time that Mr big boar decides to sound his alarm and about scare the
<
out of me. 60 yards running away 200+ pounds of muscle.
I climb up and around another hillside and as I crest the top I hear a wheeze and out runs black sow with a white belt and 4 footballs come running after her and then a dark dry sow, they run passed in front and into the chemise. I'm thinking they really have good noses. I finish working the ridge and its 5:45pm another 30 minutes to hunt, the best time right! I look back up the ridge and see this ...

I head back up the ridge as I can't do the stalk from below, need to watch the down drafts. I get over above the boar and hear the oak leaves crackling.. Here is the shot picture.

35 yards line of site, 30 degree downhill angle, need to use my 30 pin. the boar is feeding just below oak tree and behind it 3 yards, hard to see him till he steps passed. I felt good about the draw, sight, release, the arrow flight was good, the left/right was right on in line with front leg, To me the shot was low, but at the angle it is tough to see the impact. I saw the hog turn with the arrow sticking out of right side and head down the hill. I noticed quite a bit of arrow, so arrow penetration was an issue. Decided to wait until morning to do the tracking..
Headed out at first light, found the arrow after 40 yards, busted off, with only 6.5 inches
left in the boar. No blood at the site, just footprints down a draw in the chemise. Followed it 400 yards or so then found this

Chop came by with his dog and we tried for awhile to follow and search around for no avail. I went back for due diliengence and got down on my hands and knees and found more blood and actually followed the blood trail another 400 or so yards, spot here, spot there every 5-20 feet or so until it went into this
IMG_0728.jpg

I crawled in and never found anymore sign in the infinite directions it could have gone.

What an up and down mental experience trailing can be.
I guess shot placement is the key, with oneshot getting a pass thru and me getting not enough.

Spent the afternoon glassing and spotting another boar and stalked up to 20 yards or so of him but was just off on my stalk and put myself directly above him and he winded me again.

Not much happened Sun AM, and two things stick out on the hunt. full moon had the hogs out at nite, and the 10 days before the hunt there was little activity on the ranch. We saw more hogs the first 2 days, and it just tapered off the last 2 days. That last hour or so before dark was the best. Quite an adaptable animal and challenge to hunt with a bow. I can definitely see myself doing this again! Thanks for all the help!
