10mm vs piggy

Has anybody killed a pig with a 10mm? I am in the process of buying a glock 20, and was wondering how it would do against a big boar. The 10mm is ballistically comparable to a .41 magnum, not as big as a .44 but larger than a .357. I would probably use it as a backup pistol to my 30.06, but I might take it out and hunt with it exclusively once in a while.

Btw, I the pigs I hunt are a cross between Russians and feral cross, weighing up to 600-700lbs, with the majority of the big Russian boars around 200-300lbs.

I use a G20 for Back-up Hog huntin. Havent shot one with it yet but hope to soon. The 10mm will do fine on hogs in the 150 range but i dont know about those 700lb 'ers!!

Biggest pig I have heard of being taken out where I hunt was gutted at over 500lbs. This pig had a set of marbles that looked like bowling balls. The guy that shot the pig weighed about 350lbs and shot it 2 times with a 25-06. After a few minutes he went to go find it, it had gone down in a ravine. When he got down there the pig charged him. He got off 1 shot before the pig got to him, amazingly shooting it in the jaw. The pig got to him, but without being able to chew him up just rooted him around a little bit. The guy was able to hold onto his rifle and shot the pig in the head on the second charge. All the land is private and the pigs don't get too much hunting pressure, which allows them to get huge.


Btw.... the biggest pig on record (which I found out after a little internet research) is 2500 lbs, so 700lbs isn't unheard of. The feral pigs get huge, and the Russians that were mixed with the pigs were imported for a hunting ranch that went bankrupt. I guess the guy just released all the pigs, which then bred with the ferals. I'll try to get a pic scanned of a 300lber I got a few years back and post it.

Well, if you do run into a 700# wild pig, it's going to be like shooting a elk, except elk don't have a thick shield of cartiledge covering their vitals. I'd pass on a 10mm for the pigs your describing.

Good topic, as I too have wondered about the One Centimeter up against some porcine beast, although the ones I'm going after might be 150+, not 650+.

When traipsing around in the woods, I'll often carry my Colt Delta Elite stoked with 190 Sierra JFP handloads (over AA#7 or Blue Dot). They're probably doing somewhere between 1000-1100 FPS.

I'd imagine they'd serve well on a close and well-placed shot, but, if I'm getting that close, I'd just as soon send the inaugural shot out of my M1895G 45-70!!

I once talked to a guy at a gun show who was a big 10mm fan (as I am). He said that he used his glock 20 exclusively when he was hunting hogs and that it had never failed to do the job. Just about any decent sized pistol cartridge would do, so I would not worry about it. My brother killed a pig with a 45 with FMJ's--it did have more than one hole all the way through it before he was done though. I think everyone worrys too much about caliber, but that's just my opinion.

Might be enough for small hogs, but I'm not sure it would handle one of those big boars.

I knew a guy who posted one in the head with a 10mm and dropped him. He had to crawl in some heavy brush and couldnt take the long gun in with him. Worked like a charm.

Not sure if the 10mm is a solid cartridge for hogs or if he was lucky.

I use a Glock 21 (.45 ACP) for two reasons. First is that's what I have. Secondly is the fact that I have 13+1 rounds to shoot, plus another 13 round magazine that can be loaded into the gun within 4-6 seconds. I know a larger magnum caliber is better, but I have 7 more rounds to put down range and 7 more opportunities to hit the pig in the "cookies". I have shot many pigs for for my clients with my .45 ACP and can attest that if you hit it in the head then you shouldn't have any problems putting it down. The .45's penetrate pretty well at 5-20 feet (typical finish off shot). I've even shot a coule of moving pigs from the side through their shoulder and those all worked also. I think though with the .45 you'd have troubles with a on-coming chest shot or a quartering to you shot on a big pig. Your bullet would have to penetrae the shield and the shoulder bone, which might prove to be too much for the .45.
