I ended up booking a hunt next weekend with a different guide but I have exchanged a few e mails with Jim. Seems like a nice guy and I will likely book my next hunt with him.

Yeah, he's a good guy. He has a good enough sense of humor to absord my jabs that I've seen more pigs in two trips to Cache Creek than I have in two trips to his properties. :)

He sounds like he's pretty booked up for the next couple of months and he's having a kid in May.

I booked him for the end of May. I am hoping to have some luck. I have had the darndest time finding pigs this year so we will see how it goes. This will also be my first guided hunt of any kind so I am not entirely sure what to expect. I would welcome any advice. Thanks gents.

The two times I've gone with him have been completely different hunts, so it's hard to say what the hunt will be like. The first time we went was a lot of uphill hiking. The morning was a quick up and down. The afternoon was a long hike up, sit and glass for an hour or so, then slowly work your way down the hill checking over every ledge. Second time the morning hunt consisted of him driving me most of the way to the top of a hill on an old logging road. I hiked up the rest of the road to the top byself, then worked my way down a hill on the other side. He gave me instructions for everywhere to check and then he drove the mule down and around the hill and picked me up at the bottom. Then the afternoon we hiked maybe a mile or two on a property following cow trails in and out of cover basically in the valleys between small hills. Not a ton of elevation change.

He picks where to hunt based on what he's seeing in the trail cams...then picks how to hunt on the ability of the hunter.

I way overpacked my first trip. You can bring whatever you want, just leave most of it in your car. You're never more than a mile from your car on the properties I've been to. On your actual hunt, pack lite. No sense carrying things you probably don't need and if you do are a short walk back to get. I didn't even carry water with me my second time, just left it in the car. Might be a bit hotter in May though.
