All I can say it was an amazing day, I am dead tired, but, after hunting almost 20 days archery and getting the big skunk I gotta say my kids vindicated me. I couldnt be prouder.
There was one day off between my archery season and my 2 oldest kids youth bull hunt. As it turned out, I was not able to scout the evening before the hunt but was able to scout the morning before.
That morning, I decided all i wanted to do was stop at several places the hour before shooting light and the first hour of shooting light and see if I could hear any bulls bugle. I heard some good bugles coming from a draw that i have had some luck pig hunting in so i call it pig draw.
My son the evening before could go out to scout so i sent him to our favorite glassing spot and he glassed a good bull coming out before dark. So the day before the season we had 5 different options to start with..
Interuption... My son is here to help me post some pics.... will be continued.
This is a bull that me and my daughter were stalking (about 300 yards away) when from out of no where we heard a shot and the bull went down.
It turns out that this young man shot this bull from about 350 yards away on a opposite hill side and it turned out to be my 7 year olds football coach's kid that shot it. Wow!!!!!
This is one of my son's friends, Kade, he is 14 years old.
He also drew the youth bull hunt. By the way all of these bulls were killed the first day of the season and within 15 miles of our house. This bull is a 6X8. His cap is covering the 6th, 7th and 8th point on the right hand side.
Opening day morning, we got to pig draw 40 minutes before shooting light. We heard a distant bugle so headed up the draw. Got about 1/4 mile and saw a cow in the bottom, and I thought great. A cow blows a morning hunt for us again.
We heard the bugle again and started up the side to get up on top and see if we could glass him up. Up on top we still could not see him so we figured he was just over the side of the hill across the draw about 400 yards away.
I then took my 11 year old daughter to circle around to the other side. I told my son it was about 400 yards to the top after i used the range finder and I knew he hit a coyote at 25o yards so I told him if he got a good shot he could take it. me and my daughter took off and circled around to the back of the distant hill. When we crested it I saw the bull through the brush at about 80 yards. He stepped into a clearing with a couple of cows but my daughter could not get a shot off quickly enuf and we spooked them. We set off in slow pursuit and about 4 minutes later i hear boom and the thump of a bullet hitting and elk, 2 minutes after that, i hear another boom and another thump.
I raise Josh on the walkie talkie and he said that he took the 350 to 400 yard shot and that after the first shot the elk headed straight for him and his 2nd shot was about 250 yards and both were hits. I headed over to where the first shot was and found bright foamy blood. A lung shot I thought, this should be easy.
It was not easy. We trailed and lost that blood trail many times over the last 3.5 hours. I sent Josh to run Lauren home as she had a volleyball game that she had to go to. Several times we lost the blood trail and found it again 40 yards out. At one point after we followed the trail down into a canyon 300 yards later it headed up out of the canyon after following the bottom, We really got lucky here as the blood we finally found was 70 yards from the last blood we found and not following the same basic direction. Josh is the one that had found that spoor.
When we finally found him, his back legs had already stiffened up. Josh was really pumped to say nothing of me. We were high fiving, and pumping fists and really happy. This was Josh's first elk hunt and he shot a really nice 5x6. We got pics, cut him up carried him to the truck in pieces, got home, finished skinning and hanging the meat and off we went to take Lauren out. I will finish this story shortly.
Boy, you got em good! Congrats to you and your children. Especially Lauren for coming from not wanting to even shoot to this point. That takes a heck of a Dad!!
Paul, I wonder if you could get another picture like that of Josh for his Senior year book... That would be cool!
Is this the same paulc formerly from Riverside? I thought you disappeared. How dumb was I to not put 2 and 2 together. Good for you and your family. I want to hunt elk in NM. I have a very bad case of elk fever and my Dr told me to feed the fever!!! Ed F
When we finally got Josh's bull skinned, hung up and cleaned up it was about 4:30 pm. We got back into the truck and headed to our our favorite glassing place that Josh had glassed some bulls from the day before. He hiked up with my 15 power binocs and tripod and Lauren and I headed up an old logging road to a saddle that he had seen a good bull and cows on the evening before.
This is a burn area so before we started up to the saddle we glassed josh and he indicated that there were already elk out by the edge of the burn. This meant that we had to back track and really sneak up this open mountain side. I had found the herd with my glasses and there was a real good 6x6 in there and he was bugling. We had been sneaking about 40 minutes and were about 300 yards away when we heard a shot and a whump. What the heck??
I glassed my son and he was making signs like we shot the bull. I glassed over there again and all the elk were gone. someone had shot the bull. We headed over there and sure enuf that huge bull was down. About 10 minutes later a father and his son showed up. They were really excited. I was really happy for that young man. He had made an awsome shot from over 300 yards away. I came to find out that his mom coached my 7 year olds football team.
This one of the 3 bulls that i had really been working hard on during archery season. 2 times i had been within 40-50 yards but had to much brush to shoot an arrow thru.
My daughter was a little bummed. but we quickly decided to salvage the evening as we heard bugles in the distance..
