It was about 6:30 when we started heading towards the distant bugles. It gets dark about 7:40 up here so we really had to head out as there was some steep stuff we had to go over.
When we started to get closer we could tell there was more than one bull bugling. At about 7:30 we got into the area. It was a very steep canyon and right off i saw a group of cows and a good bull across from us. I used the range finder and it ranged it at 230 yards. My daughter smartly said that was to far.

Just 6 weeks ago i could not get her to pull the trigger on the 7mm08 in youth. but the last few weeks she had got much better.

We kept going down the canyon as we heard a bull close down lower. Now it really was almost end of shooting light. I squeaked on the Hoochie Mama and got an immediate response and we could see a bull about 60 yards away in a small opening. I glassed real quickly and could see that it was at least a fork as was all that is neccessary for the youth hunt. she could not get it into her scope from a sitting position and the bull moved out of the opening. I kept calling and he moved into another opening broadside. I told her to shoot at any time. Now it was hard to see him with a naked eye as we were deep in the canyon and we under tree cover.
I called again and said shoot, (she was still trying to get comfortable) I called again and said shoot. I did this a couple more times and now i was saying shoot dammit (forgive me i was getting stressed). Kaboom down he went
I told her to shoot again even though he was down as the mornings 3.5 hour tracking job was fresh in my mind. Boom!!

Then he was down. How much excitement can a father have for his kids in one day.

While we were taking pics and gutting there were 3 bulls (the closest 150yards) screaming their heads off.

We had a 2.5 mile hike out in the dark and in major deadfall. We were bushed when we met up with my son at the truck at 9:30.

The next morning we packed it out and spent the rest of the day cutting and wrapping.

I just talked to my bro in MS and he will be able to make it out for ML season this sat for a couple of days even though he lost his house in Katrina.

I need at least that much time to recover.

I can't think of anything that would make me happier than hunting elk with my kids. I hope the day will come. Congratulations on an incredible first season in your new home. Sounds like heaven. You're kids are lucky to have a great dad. Good luck with the ML hunt.
