MOUNT ERIE, Ill. — Two Southern Illinois men face battery charges and a host of conservation citations in connection with a widening investigation into deer poaching in northern Wayne County.
David Seifert, 42, of Albion, and Dennis R. Gardner, 33, of Olney, have been arrested by conservation authorities in connection with deer poaching on farms near Mount Erie.
Seifert is accused of grabbing and choking Mount Erie farmer Albert J. Merrick on Dec. 3 after being refused permission to hunt on his land. Seifert also allegedly spit in Merrick’s face and shoved another Mount Erie farmer, Allen Coley.
Gardner is accused of striking Allen Coley after being refused permission to hunt deer on his property.
Illinois Conservation Police also cited both men with numerous offenses related to the hunting of whitetail deer.
The charges include hunting deer from a vehicle, illegal possession and transportation of whitetail deer taken out of season and hunting without a license.
Gardner’s hunting privileges were revoked for five years in 1997 after pleading guilty to deer poaching charges.
Both men have posted bond and have been released pending a court appearance in Wayne County Circuit Court.
