Well I finally got my first pig, then I got my second.

Here's the story:
I was up on some private land near Parkfield, CA. I had missed my first shot in the morning, the pigs were on to us, even though we were 500 yards out. I figured my chances were over for the weekend, since we couldn't get up on those ones in the morning. Then in the afternoon, we went back out to start glassing canyons at about 230-300. We started glassing, and all i could hear was branches snapping and snorting, at the bottom of the canyon was about 12-15 pigs, a bunch of sow's and some larger pigletts. I still couldn't get too close to them, since there was no cover to hike down to them, so i took my shot at 250-260 yards out. One shot, one kill. I picked up a nice meat sow, 150 lbs. Then as we were heading back to camp, across a canyon, we saw a nice boar. So we coasted down the canyon road with the engine off, once we got to the bottom, we piled out and put a nice stalk on the boar. it went up over the ridge, so we took an angle, caught up to him and caught him about 15 yards away. Put him down, a 260 lb. blonde boar. So by 430-500 o'clock, I had my two pigs for the weekend, and enough time to drive home and catch the super bowl. Here are the pics.

I was using a guide named Marti Rovenstine, his number is (805) 467-3139 . I definitely recommend trying him out. Like i said, i had three shots within one day. I was able to get two of the three.

btrebil,
I'm not spamming,
but I too have hunted with Marty and he is a great guy, great guide, has some nice ranches to hunt and I too scored. I would highly recommend him to any and all, especially those people who are thinking of spending time and money trying to hunt on public land.

Btrebil,

Don't forget to add your review of the guide in the JHO Guide Reviews section. We need to get some more hog guides in there.

If you don't mind sharing, what was Marti's rate?

Good job on nice hogs.
I've hunted w/Marty a few times in the past.
It's been a while, but his rates were in line (maybe less) w/others that provide the same type of hunt.
Before I started bowhunting, that's the guy I would go w/,unless he was booked.
I didn't ever feel ripped off, and didn't feel the need to look for anther guide for rifle hunts.
If I were to do another guided rifle hunt (not out of the question) I would call Marty first.

I will put a nice review in the Guide forum tonight, but Marty was definitely reasonable on his rates, 250 a day to get onto the ranch, then if you shot a meat pig, another 100 bucks, or a trophy, another 200 bucks. Like I said earlier, Marty was great, showed me some wonderfuld country, lots of pigs, some coyotes and bobcats as well. My experience was so good, I am going to make this an annual trip.

I was shooting my trusty old 30-06, had it since i was 9 years old. I was shooting a 180 grain bullet, and i was surprised that the bullet didn't go all the way through the boar. I wasn't more than 15 yards away when i shot it, and it didn't break through.

Btrebil,
Thanks for the report. I've hunted the area with the Miller Bros. Great hog country.
