L2H, before you go dumping a bunch of money into a crossbow, I'd encourage you to marginally broaden your horrizens and consider getting a compound bow.

The fact that "real" archers tend to look down their noses a bit at crossbows notwithstanding, you'll have MANY more legal opportunities to hunt with a compound bow than you will a crossbow. For that matter, this Lake Sonoma special hunt is the ONLY hunt that I know of where crossbows can be used during an archery season. For the most part, the DFG classifies crossbows the same as rifles.

Although crossbows are physically easier to shoot than a compound bow, you still need get all the other arrow-flight & broadhead tuning issues correct or your arrows won't fly straight or group well, so you may as well invest your time and money in a compound bow that will yield more hunting opportunities for you.

Moreover, you can't shoot a crossbow at any of the public archery ranges that I know of (again, because crossbows are more similar to a rifle than a "real" bow). You'll be missing out on some serious comradery if you limit yourself to a crossbow. Also, unless you have land, where will you practice? Crossbow's need quite a bit more practice than rifles in order to be able to hit your target.

Performance-wise, both will kill hogs dead, but crossbow's don't kill them any deader than a regular compound bow, ceteris paribus.

Let us know where you live and we'll recommend an archery pro-shop near you so that you can try out some bows.

Hope to see you out there, with "real" archery equipment.

p.s. As usual, I'll include a disclaimer that I may be a bit off the mark here, and that the whole world thinks crossbows are great, so I'd appreciate it if some other archers and/or crossbow hunters can provide some additional viewpoints.

I got the number and I'll call tonight... all things depending, I could be up for some brew-ha-ha'ing
<
but tomorrow evening might work better for me.

I can't leave until the future-Mrs.-Backcountry gets off work... probably won't hit the road until traffic is thick at 6:30pm or so.

Good luck, and don't let in2blacktail kill one of the pets.

Backcountry,

I do have a compound bow, a PSE Nova set at 60 lbs. draw. I've been archery hunting a couple of times. Killed one pig, a number of jack rabbits, and came close to sticking some bucks. Mostly I'll be hunting with my compound bow at Lake Sonoma but trying out a crossbow is something I would like to experience. The main idea of a crossbow is to make me look like one of my relatives in North Carolina as I do join them once in a while on their hunts. They all shoot crossbow over there and I just wanted to blend in with them. I've never shot a crossbow before and it'll be nice to try. Plus it'll be an addition to my wall where I hang my bow hunting equipments.

That has to be about the best multifacted explanation I've ever heard for getting a crossbow!

For someone that doesn't own any bows, or that isn't handicapped, I'd still suggest getting a regular bow first (long, recurve, or compund).

But since you already have the compound bow covered, plus several other reasons, I can't wait to see the pics of your new crossbow and hear how fast it shoots. I think the fact that you already are an experienced archer will help when it comes to chosing your crossbow too.

We should plan a JHO D-I-Y pighunt and campout sometime this winter... December through March the pig hunting is open every day of the week except holidays and a couple days for dedicated turkey hunts in March. The fact that weekends are available this year means we could probably get a decent turnout. A few guys with boats and we could haul gear and hunters to one of the remote boat-in sites and probably support a group of 12-15 hunters.

Oh yeah, now this is a good idea! Post up if you're interested.

A JHO DIY pighunt at Lake Sonoma sounds good. I have an old boat that'll cary 1000 lbs. max. capacity. If things turned out in my favor, I'm game.

It's some pretty steep country, you'll need a boat to access the more productive areas, but you can go at it without one. Kentuck, his step son, my son and myself got into some hogs last time. Kentuck's son drew blood, but the hit was a little far back. A few weeks later, Backcountry, Kentuck and myself went back and again spotted some hogs.

I'm not even sure if I'll be able to make this hunt at all. I'm heading up to X3b for a little over a week, and then on November 12th i'm haveing surgery and will be out another week. Kind of eats up my vacation time, but if I can swing it i'll be there!

Here's a pic to get your Lake Sonoma blood pumping. This pic is of myself, my son Justin and Kentuck's son Dominick stalking up on a herd of hogs. You can see them just below the trees. You can actually see Justin with his white shirt, Dom is too his right and a little high and I'm too Justin's left. One hog came down and was headed in our direction, he turned broadside to Dom. Dom took the shot, but was hit pretty far back. Didn't get a lot of penitration, we found the arrow broke off at the broadhead, must of hit bone. We searched for a while, and then couldn't find anymore blood. This hog is still roaming those hills. I had this hog running right in between Justin and I, if he would have continued on his regular path, he would have came to about 10 yards. This was exciting to say the least.

I can't make the 5th. Have a dr's appointment. Don't have much vacation time the rest of this year. Will have the last week of Dec. off. May be able to do a day before then. Need to add that I get every other Friday off from work so once the hunts start on them I can go on some Friday's.

We'll try to leave a hog or two alive for you and Dominick! Do you want me to tie them to the tree with blue rope or red rope?

Being from Wildcat country make it a blue rope. Even though Pitino is at UofL I still think red wouldn't work.
Looking at the calendar of the hunts looks to me the pigs might be a bit stirred up with all the deer hunting that will be goig on. Maybe when these hunts go to every day we should hook up with Mel's guide that hunts the land next to the lake. The pigs would probably be pushed up on his place big time then.

BD,

I forgot to add that you need to give me plenty of notice of planned hunts with you seeing as you have had numerous high country hikes/camps this summer. My legs are still in terribly bad flatlander shape and I know how you like to go up hills!

Well then consider that notice is hearby given... prepare your legs now to hunt later.

Also consider that I don't at all mind being a team player and working a bit harder in order to attempt to drive some pigs downhill to where you lay in wait. Really, I just like being out there and if anyone in the party scores, I consider it a sucessful outing. If I based my sucess soley on how often I personally brought home the bacon, I'd have given up a long time ago.

We do need to put some contingency plans in place regarding where I choose to go #2, and where you choose to hunt, but that should be easy to work out come game day. You don't need the fright that you got last time, and I don't need an arrow in the caboose!
