2004 Conservation Stamp Painting to Be Crowned April 4; Public Invited

03/28/2003

CHEYENNE – Be one of the first to see the mountain lion artwork you’ll be packing on hunting and fishing trips in 2004.

The public is invited to the reception announcing the winner of the 20th annual Conservation Stamp Art Competition, April 4 at the Wyoming State Museum, 2301 Central in Cheyenne.

The free event hosted by the Game and Fish Department starts with hors d'oeuvres and refreshments from 5-6 p.m. with the announcement of the top five paintings at 6:15 p.m. All paintings, except first place, can be purchased following the announcement.

The competition attracted 164 entries, but the available space at the show only accommodates 114 paintings.

"With all the quality entries, it made it very difficult to pare the field down to what the facility can hold, but we are pleased that we will have a fine quality winner and great group for the Top 40 traveling art shows," said Mary Link, art competition coordinator. "The number of entries was probably higher this year due to such a dynamic subject."

The 114 cougar paintings will continue to be displayed at the museum Tuesday through Saturday through May 24.

The show is being judged by Joan Fullerton, an nationally known artist from Cheyenne; Doug Jonas of Mountain West Printing in Denver; and Laramie artists Virginia Madsen and Robert Seabeck. Serving as a non-voting consultant to the judges is Harry Harju, G&F retired assistant Willdlife Division chief.

The winning mountain lion painting will be printed on nearly 300,000 conservation stamps in 2004.
