As a side note.....I plan on joining Tejon on the Explorer package this year. I should have some good info for those of you that have never hunted Tejon and need a little help.

A couple of notes for those of you who are considering this hunt.

First of all, Tejon does not allow any non-hunting guests during the PORs. Anyone who comes will have to have a valid license, tag, and will have to pay the full fee. Some of you have asked about bringing companions, so I want to make sure everyone is clear on this.

Secondly, only street-legal, registered vehicles are allowed on the property. No 4-wheelers, dune buggies, or motorcycles are permitted.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Karstic, I'm sure you sent me your info, but I don't have you on the spreadsheet. Apologies... another bunch of apps will go out in the next few days. I'll make sure you're in there.

Oh, and by the way... anyone else interested... make sure if you want to hunt, to request your apps directly from me and not from other ProStaffers or Moderators.

Is this for a full two days?
It's going to be pretty warm, what do folks do with their meat?
Also, is there a limit on the number of pigs you can take?

Sorry if I asked any questions that may have been answered earlier or are self understood ...

Jaeger,

I'd normally suggest a search, as the PORs have definitely been discussed at length... but just to keep it all in a single thread..

For anyone interested, who doesn't know about this hunt...

The POR is a two and one half day hunt on the Tejon Ranch for one hog per hunter. Any legal weapon is permitted. Most people who have hunted here before recommend using a rifle, although it's purely up to you. There are area where you can have a realistic chance of success with bow or muzzleloader.

Our specific hunt will take place in the South Side of the ranch (there are three hunting zones). I forget the actual acreage, but it is quite significant. For 50 hunters, it'e entirely possible to hunt areas where you never see another hunter. However, many of us have some favorite areas that tend to overlap. But as yet, that has never been a problem. There are hogs everywhere.

The hunt begins at check in on Friday morning, and if everything goes smoothly we are in the gates by noon. Most of us use that opportunity to make camp, then get out and start scouting. Some folks prefer to get right into the bush, and set up camp later. Either way is fine. Once you're on the property, you're hunting on your own.

Speaking of camping...

There is a designated camping area inside the ranch. The camping area is easily accessible for RVs or camp trailers, and there is plenty of semi-level ground. Tents also work fine here. There is a large, common area, but you can camp away form the central area if you like. There will be a renta-john onsite, but that's it for facilities. There is no water, no power, and no trash receptacles. That last is pretty important to note. THERE IS NO GARBAGE SERVICE. Plan to pack it out if you pack it in.

There will be no open fires at that time of year. Someone usually brings a fire ring or two if conditions permit. If it's too dry, we'll have to center around lanterns. Hard to tell what May will be like this year. It can definitely vary.

If there is some reason that you absolutely cannot camp, there are hotels nearby in Grapevine and Lebec. If a hotel is a requirement, we'll need to make specific arrangments ahead of time. Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss this.

If you get your hog, the ranch will usually have someone manning the scales back at the gate. This will be determined when the event gets closer. If there is someone on the scales, they would like to have every animal weighed and logged in their books. Usually, there are a couple of scales in camp as well. We do need to have some record of every animal taken, so please make sure we get that info from you, along with the harvest card from your tag. More on that at the event.

There is a meat pole in the camping area where you can hang and process your animal. Weather permitting, you can hang the pig overnight (ir longer if it's cool). However, I would ask that you be considerate and not leave your animal on the meat pole to hang, so other people can use the pole to skin and process their own animals. There are plenty of trees in the camp area, and bears are not a problem. Also, you are responsible for removing all of the scrap, skin, bones, etc. after skinning. Hides and scraps can be disposed of in the woods, well away from the camp area.

The ranch is in the condor zone, so you are requested to bury your gut piles if possible to keep the lead out of the critters' systems.

If it's warm (as it may be in May), you should plan to have a cooler of ice big enough to stow your animal in. There is no hanging cooler on site, or (to the best of my knowledge) in Lebec.

Access to the ranch is through a locked gate. There will only be a couple of keys, so if you need to get on or off the ranch for supplies, you'll need to coordinate with a keyholder. PLEASE bear in mind that the folks with keys are paying guests (including me), and we are there to hunt. If you need to get in or out, we'll try to coordinate and work with you, but don't expect anyone to interrupt their hunt so you can go get a bag of ice or a six-pack of beer. Plan ahead, and come prepared.

If there is an emergency and you cannot contact me or one of the keyholders, every hunter will have a list of phone numbers for Tejon staff. This will be distributed at the check-in, along with instructions.

If you have tagged out, you do not have to stay the entire weekend. Coordinate with me or one of the keyholders to check out. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE RANCH WITHOUT LETTING ONE OF US KNOW!!! If I think you're still on the ranch, I will have to wait for you... then go look for you on Sunday night. That will suck.

I think that's a pretty full summary. If you have more questions, feel free to post them up.

Speck, I hunted with you before (with Mike, the lion episope from your website). Can I ask some stupid questions? Where is Tejon? I'd love to pull this off, but if it's to far away, no can do.

Matt,

Tejon is all the way down south on 5, at the Grapevine (where you cross the mtns into L.A.). It's a hefty drive, but one of the nicest places I've ever had the pleasure of hunting.

If you can make it, that would be awesome. But I can sure understand if making the distance is too big a deal. It's about 5 hours for me on a good day.

Karstic...

Now, now. Dry those crocodile tears.

As I did last year, I'm sending the application packets out in bunches, rather than one at a time. As soon as I get a 10 or 15 requests, I'll send out a pile of apps. It just makes it easier on me. I've got another little pile now, so I expect my next mailing will go out within a week or so.

If it starts to book up and it becomes a question of who gets their app in first, then I'll send them out quickly to make sure everyone has a fair chance. But as of right now, I haven't received any paid apps, so there's no hurry.

Hronk,

The non-members are fine. So far, over-selling hasn't been an issue and I don't expect it will this year either. Friends, family, etc. are fine. The more the merrier!

Speck, I would hate to see all you guys up there without me but I just don't have the extra room in the deep freeze for the meat. Maybe it's time to buy a bigger freezer for the garage.

I miss the ranch and the pig hunts. I'm sure you all will have great success old and new visitors to Tejon. That ranch is one of the few places left in this area that I would consider God's country and I'm afraid it too might have a target on it. I can just see my honey holes in my head pouring out those monster pigs.
