Hey Russ,

Scott's definitely a hunting machine, but he's also got an ace in the hole for this season. My guess is, his "hard" hunting will be done before May even rolls around.

EA, it'll be great to have you out! You'll definitely take the prize for longest distance travelled... unless Buckeye decides to bail out of FL and come back to the nest. There'll be lots of guys there to give direction, including myself.

The main considerations you'll want to look into are:

Lodging... I definitely recommend staying on-site rather than in a motel. I'd offer space in my little camper, but I think my spare bed is already claimed. If no one else has camper space to share, I do have a tent and air mattress you can use, so I'll hook you up... save you from packing it in your luggage. May should be fairly comfortable, weather-wise... at least at night. The days'll likely get warm, but you shouldn't be sleeping in the daytime anyway. Probably won't sleep much at night either, but that's a different story.
<

Flying in... Bakersfield is pretty close, but you could also fly into LA. Not sure if there's a positive price difference there, so whichever is cheaper is the route I'd take.

Vehicle... unless one of the guys here wants to coordinate with you and offer a ride, you'll need a rental car. I would strongly recommend renting a 4WD and putting the extra insurance on it. In May, the roads shouldn't be too bad, but 4WD is definitely a help in getting into the better hunting areas. Some of the roads are pretty steep and well-rutted. The extra insurance may be handy in the event of some backcountry pinstriping or minor stuff like that. If you can't rent a 4WD, you can get into Tejon in pretty much anything. The main roads are very good (they shoot a lot of car commercials in Tejon... you've probably seen some of the places we'll hunt on TV), so even a compact or economy car would be fine to get you to the hunt.

Food and supplies... Get that stuff on the ground in Bakersfield or LA. Plan to be completely self-sufficient for three days. There's usually all kinds of food and beverage being shared around camp, but you ought never count on the generosity of others. If you have leftovers at the end of the weekend, donate them. An option, of course, is to coordinate with one of the JHOers and pool resources.

A common trick among travelling sportsmen is to pack an ice chest with your clothing and gear for the flight out, then use the cooler for your food when you arrive. This minimizes your checked luggage. Bring along an empty duffel to pack your clothes home, and use the cooler for your meat. Another option is to pick up a cheap cooler at WalMart in Bakersfield when you get here. Either way, you'll definitely need an ice chest, both during the hunt and to store your pork(think positive).

Hunting gear... well, this is just like any big game hunt. You'll want your weapon of choice and ammo for it. Your deer gun should be fine for hogs. Tons of information on guns, loads, etc. in this forum...and you've probably seen most of it. I do recommend carrying a backup gun any time you travel to hunt. There's no telling what might happen to a scope or a gun stock in between check-in and baggage claim. In addition to my -06, I usually have an extra .308 when I go, and if you need it (and I don't), you're welcome to it. But if you have a backup, you'd probably do well to pack it along. A handgun is not required, although if it gives you comfort, bring it.

You'll also, absolutely, want to have your binos along. Good glass is vital at Tejon, as the best way to find a hunting spot is to glass from the ridges, then spot and stalk.

A skinning knife is imperative, because you're going to want to field dress the animal. Once you're back in camp, I'm sure you'll find plenty of available knives to skin and butcher, but again... I never like to count on someone else's tools.

Clothing... CA weather is quite fickle, and this early in the year it's hard to tell what May will hold. I recommend packing for layers. Mornings will probably be pretty chilly, but the day will quickly heat up with the sunrise. Evenings will cool down again, although the real chill won't usually set in until after dark. Expect temperature fluctuations of 20 to 30 degrees between morning and mid-day. While rain isn't expected in May, it can happen. We'll see more patterns when the hunt gets closer... but it never hurts to have some rain gear. I picked up a set of the Cabelas packable rain gear last year, and it's been awesome for travelling on out-of-state hunts.

Boots... you'll want lightweight boots that are comfortable over lots of ground. Ankle support is critical on the steep terrain. Waterproof is good, but not usually a requirement in May. If it gets hot early this year, the rattlers will probably be out. I think caution and vigilance are a lot more important than fancy snake boots, but it is a consideration.

Other stuff... since you'll be flying, I know you'll want to minimize extra gear. I would typically recommend a pack frame, miles of rope, extra knives and sharpeners, and all that stuff... but I think this is a case where you can rely on the goodness of your fellow hunters. I always have a lot of rope, and I know Scott does too. I'll also have a pack frame. If you have a hog down in a hell hole, someone of us will help you on the recovery.

You will want a two-way radio, and I'd also recommend a GPS. The roads aren't really well marked or mapped back there, and on at least one particular dark and stormy night, the GPS helped a couple of wayward hunters find our way back to camp.
<

That's all I can think of now. You'll, of course, want to get your license and tag... as you'll need both of those in order to complete the hunt application anyway. You can find the info you need for out of state hunters on the CA DFG website. It is a little unfortunate, but in CA you'll have to buy the full annual license in order to get a pig tag. The three-day license is not accepted for big game hunting.

I am getting pretty excited already. I am sure by May I will be more than ready for some nice weather
<
Sounds like I pretty much have the gear covered. Anyone have a little xtra room for a wayfaring hunter, I would be happy to trade a Tompack for the digs.. If not I very well may take you up on the tent Speck. As far as the rope goes I may get someones address and mail it out there prior to the trip. We have what not shop in town that sells bulk rope cheap, you can get 50-100 feet for a buck or two so I will probley just leave it with someone out there when I leave. Thanks again Speck for the info. Will anyone have a cooking apparatus I can use, or will I need to look into a portable burner? I am sure I will have a million more qestions so please bear with me...

EA, I'll have plenty of supplies, I'll load up extra water and will have a BBQ and a Coleman stove. You're welcome to whatever is in my camp. I should have an extra spot in my tent trailer if you want it.

Man, you guys are killing me. I want to go on this hunt soooooo bad. But, I just can't justify the money. Besides my yearly Golden Ram dues, I have racked up over $20 K debt on this habitat project
<
. I have to get the water holes finished and fenced so that I can get reimbursed by the USF&WS. I just don't know if I will be able to make it all work. Grrrrrrrrrr

Just an update...

I've had some delays in sending out this latest bunch of apps. I still need to get over to the copy center and make up new packets. As soon as I do, they will go out.

My apologies to those of you I told would be receiving packets this week, but I've got to tend to my paying job first (which is what I should be doing instead of surfing JHO right now), then to my family next... and then I can get to these applications.

Thanks for the patience.

OK, the latest batch of Apps went in the mail today. If you have requested a packet and it hasn't come by Friday, you can contact me then.

Remember that if you are hunting in a party, you are responsible for making copies of THE ENTIRE PACKET for each party member. You should also be responsible for collecting all of the packets and sending the whole group in together.

Have at 'em!

Got a qestion for you Cali folks. I called the San diego game and fish office and a gal there said I could get my license and tag by mailing by faxing or mailing my current hunting license (I assume my tag from last year? as we don't have just hunting license and seperate tags), my Drivers license and a credit card #. She didn't sound to confident about the info she was giving me so is this true or does anyone know what I do need to do inorder to get my tag and license? Thanks all Tom
