Thanks Phil..

That sounds like an awesome opportunity to get someone's boy or grrl on a pig.

OH man that is the same time as the Arizona HAM hunt. I already told some friends we would chase some javies in Feb. I guess I wll have to make a donation to Tejon at another date.

Hey Russ, we're doing another gun hunt in May, and another archery-only hunt the first weekend in June. Think one of those dates'll work better for you?

Yes they both sound good LOL. I plan on getting in as much Tejon as possible, don't know how long the hunting opportunities at Tejon will last. Thanks Phillip

Subscribing here, so I can hear about the POR and late bow hunt application request deadline. Count me in firm for both events!

Speck - I'm thinking that your spam filter is not letting me get through. Did you get my request last week for an application package? Sorry to post on this forum.

Mr. Speck:

Did you mean to post the JHO POR dates as May 25-27th?

Thanks,

OT

hi, im new to hunting and want to try hog hunting on Tejon Ranch. I have a shotgun, but thinking of getting a 44 magnum. How far are the shots to harvest the pigs, and will the shotgun with slugs be enough. Any other information about what to bring, what to expect, how to skin a pig, etc will be helpful. thanks

In my experience at Tejon, the shots have ranged from 200+ yd. cross canyon shots to real close feet.

My personal sucesses have been at near 200yds with an '06, about 50 feet with a open sight big bore Timber Carbine, and about 100 yds. with a .300 win mag.

A shotgun with slugs would work fine if you find 'em close enough, which - if you do your work and catch some luck, isn't impossible.

If you're thinking of a .44 mag handgun, you'll be wanting to get up close and personal with them, most likely in their beds. Last year I had my .44 mag Tracker cocked and ready six feet away from a snoring pig in it's bed, but it was uphill and behind a berm from me, and I couldn't get more than the top of it's head and shoulders into play. In a blink it was gone when it finally winded me. Going into the beds is tough work and a good way to scare them out, but if you get the hang of it, it'll pay off.

My suggestion - buy an '06 if you want to do some pig hunting and get good at it. Don't buy a .44 mag lever action..It'll work for pigs, but a .30-30 or other rifle calibers just works better. Don't buy a .44 mag handgun for hunting until you're strapped with a good rifle battery.

Welcome and do a search on Tejon, and you'll learn about what to expect and what people have used to be successful there.

People have successfully hunted Tejon Ranch with everything from bows and arrows to African safari rifles. Depends on your level of skill and your determination to score with your chosen weapon.

Rancho gives you good info... hmm... maybe he's been possessed or something.

Anyway, I second the recommendation to give some serious thought to a good rifle. 30-06 is an excellent choice for its versatility and power. There are tons of others as well.

If you're new to hunting, the challenge of scoring with a close-range weapon may be a little too daunting... more likely to end in disappointment than success. With a good hunting rifle, you are set for shots at a (reasonable) distance as well as those close-ups.

Heya Guys,

For all the interest that was bandied around here, I haven't got a full complement of 8 hunters for the February archery hunt yet. I have six hunters paid and registered. We need at least 8 to hold the event, and I can handle up to 12 for the weekend.

I know several of you are still sitting on application packets. Get 'em in. Registration for this hunt closes on 1/26/07 so if you wait too long...

Also, there's still time to request an app packet if you're interested. Follow the instructions and get me your info, and we'll get you squared away (remember, email requests only... no phone calls or forum posts).

If we do not fill this hunt, I will cancel the June archery hunt dates also, and all checks will be returned to those of you who've already submitted your apps.

This hunt is for 07. Read the instructions further up in this post for info on how to get into the hunt. Plenty of room as of right now.

Pigs only on this hunt. No yotes, no squirrels, and anyone caught shooting anything other than pigs will be escorted to the gate.

Anosheh - follow the instructions and e-mail Speckmisser. He'll send you the papers to fill out, and you can go from there.

Lots of guys have gotten their first hogs on the JHO Tejon hunts, and if you do some homework - a little learnin' about what hogs do and like (hint - use the search function), you'll see pigs and have a good chance at filling a tag.
And also meet some great people and share a fun time in an awesome place.
