Valentines Pig

I went up to Vandenberg AFB with some hunting buddies over Valentines weekend to get a meat sow. On Friday, it was raining pretty heavy but it didn't keep me from my favorite spot in Area 3. I took up my sniper position near the top of the ridge and glassed for the pigs. The dried brush and grass is very tall in the fields and without good elevation, you will never see the pigs. On the ground, visibility is less than 15 feet through the 4' brush and grass. I saw seven pigs on Friday but most of the shots were between 350 - 500 yards. I established my comfort zone at less than 300 yards because of the wind and weather. On Saturday morning I headed back up and took my position and watched a few pigs foraging in an open patch of the meadow below me at 360 yards. I lost sight of them for about an hour then one of them popped out in a small clearing below me. I ranged it at 296 yards then put it the crosshairs, squeezed the trigger and let one fly. I heard a squeal and saw it dash off into the brush. I grabbed my gear then headed down the mountain to look for the pig. Once I located the impact spot, the blood trail was easy to find even though I could barely see ten feet ahead of me through the vegetation. The shot entered the small sow just behind the right shoulder and exited on the opposite side after damn near blowing off the left front leg. I couldn't believe the pig got as far as it did. It dressed out at just over 50 lbs. and it is some of the best tasting wild pig I've had in a long time. I love the small ones. Gonna go back up in a few weeks to get another one!
