Anyone want to take me as a guest? I went with my dad on this hunt last year (7th period) and we ran into 3 different groups of hogs total about 60-70 of them. Dad missed a shot around 11am. All the hogs went in the thick stuff and we can hear them and saw tips of brushes moving, but cannot see the hogs. Then right before dark they came out and dad connected on a 150 pounder. No one saw that part of the ranch that we were on except the one guy that came to within about 300 yards of us and was about to turn back, but I waved him over and showed him what we saw.

If the hogs are still inside the ranch, they should be at the same spot. In return, I just want some ribs for dinner. Had not had them for a while. PM or email me.

I've got NOV 17th and 18th. Will most likely only hunt the mornings for this hunt. Unless I see something that looks good for the evening.

Did you get your mail notification today?

What, you didn't get drawn?

I was working the check station the day L2h and his dad went on this hike, and I can attest to everything he said.

The way I see it, you have three chances: (1) first thing in the morning as the other guys/gals are pushing the pigs up the draws; (2) around noon on the north side of the property; and (3) late afternoon as the pigs start moving back out. Day-in and day-out I hear the same things from the guys that connect.

Good luck to all who drew. Remember to bring your license, permission slip, tag and non-lead ammo. We check every morning...

Just curious as to why the non lead. I have rifles sighted in for each so it isn't a big deal, but I don't believe we are in the condor range on this hunt?

The ranch is owned and operated by the National Audubon Society. They are committed to preserving all avian life and their habitats. They appreciate hunters' willingness to use nonlead ammo to preserve other scavenger species, such as ravens, crows, magpies, turkey vultures, hawks, eagles and the like. These species, like condors, are all susceptible to the effects that lead has on the central nervous system.

L2H,
My dad actually got drawn. Depending on which date he is choosen for, if I can't go with him, you are more than welcome to take him...cause he doesn't drive anymore. Will let you know later this week.

btw, you got your smoke pole ready?

That is some good news. Let me know if you want me to go, or if you just want some some advise on honey holes.

The smoke pole got scope mounted with see thru rings. It needs to hit the range to zero in with both the crossed-hairs and the iron-site. What do you have in mind with the smoke pole? I actually put in for all the East Park Reservoir draws. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Did anyone hear how the first day of hunting went? I was drawn for the Thu-Fri archery hunt and will be hunting hogs for the first time. Good luck to the other hunters and thanks to the DFG for putting this together.

hunt report

My first day of hunting was cut short due to a family medical issue, but I got within very close earshot of a group of grunting hogs within an hour sunrise. I've only bowhunted for whitetail back east, so this was a shot in the dark and a great first hunt.

I hiked in with an experienced hog hunter that gave me some good tips on the the way in. Very nice of him to help a stranger out. I set up about a mile into the property and waited for first light watching a well used game trail coming out of a wash. The quail were all over the place. At around 8am, I heard snorting and grunting up on the ridge. I hustled up the steep slope and set up below the ridgeline. I heard a very loud squeal right ahead that sounded to me like one of them had been stuck with an arrow. I set up behind a tree with the wind in my face an waited for the stampede to come my way. Things got quiet after that and I still hunted my way up the hill and found tracks and flipped cow patties but no pigs.
Never found them after that, but what a rush! The adrenaline level from being that close was unreal.

QEU,

I am age 70, so I'm probably your best choice to hunt with your dad? We would use my wife's Hummer, or my Truck & pop-up Camper?

Old age & treachery will beat youth & skill any day!

Map, becareful what you wish for. QEU's dad is about your age, maybe a few years younger. The guy is not very big, about 5' tall and weigh probably 110 or so. I'd say he's in tip top shape for any terrain. A few weeks ago, we were in D7 started at about 5000' and made the 4 hours climb to 10,000'. When I say climb I really mean climb. There was no trail. There were a few spots that we had to be on all 4 hands and feet to get thru. I'm 40 now and man I was having trouble keeping up with that little old man. I wish I was still in that physical shape when I'm at his age.
