Is it enough gun for a couple hundred pound pig? It's really the only rifle I have right now, my 308 has a cracked stock. I shoot 115 gr partitions in it, last year it dropped a buck at 300 yds with no sweat. Dennis

I think within reason the 25-06 with the right 115-120 grain pills will do any pig you run across if you shoot it in the right spot.

Probably wouldn't want to hit one from the front. They have a bit of chest armor.

I've killed them with a .257 Roberts but was very picky about the shot....hronk

The only animal I ever lost was a pig hit through the shoulders with a 25-06. It knocked him down and he got right back up a few seconds later. Found him the next day and the vultures had their way with him.

It will work fine if you can get close enough to be selective with your shots. I'd use a 120 gr Nosler Partition.

Something larger will give you more versatility, which at Tejon can be a big plus. Cross canyon shots are not uncommon.

Hmmm, I may use my 308 then. The crack does not effect the accuracy it just bugs me that it is there and I have not taken care of it yet.

Yup......lots of pigs taken with the 25-06. Doesn't mean it is the best if you have something bigger. The bigger the hammer the better. Saves you a lot of trouble tracking wounded, tenacious pigs. If the hammer is big enough, it should punch through and through and pour out an easy blood trail to follow. Hammertime means a sledgehammer if you have one available. Just my 2c of course. 'Nuff said.

Use the 25-06. It should work fine.
If you can fatally hit a deer @ 300 yds, you can make a good shot on a hog.

Please do not shoot a rifle w/ a crack in the stock.

Some companies will replace the stock gratis or for a fee, just call.

Cabelas, BassPro, Midway, Natchez, etc sell replacement stocks for many different rifles in various styles and for varying budgets.

good point. Why not just replace the stock on your .308? You can swap out a stock in minutes.

My funds are really, really limited right now so it's either the 25 or my 308. I'll just use the 25 since I'm confident in my ability to put the bullet where I need it to go. Thanks for the replies. Dennis

Dennis,

If you shoot that 25-06 well, and have the patience to keep your shots in range, you'll have no problem.

I'm one of the first to sing out about "use enough gun", but pigs aren't elephants or grizzly bears. The 25-06 with 120gr bullets will kill 'em, and using that is a whole lot safer than shooting a gun with a cracked stock.

srtyder try http://www.boydboys.com for a stock. When I checked the Springfield Armory booth at the SHOT show I looked at their M1 Garand and was informed they use Boyd Boys stocks for their Garands.

I looked at their website SCR, the price is right and I'm going to call them tomorrow about it. I can buy the stock for less than it is to buy two boxes of 25-06 partitions. Sounds good to me. THANKS!!! Dennis

Stryder,
Very good choice. The .270 will definitely be good medicine for hog fever. God Bless.
