.270 for Pigs?

I know SacfireJT has shot a number of hogs with his 270 but he is also a very short man if this helps.

2 wounded animals I don't like to bloodtrail are hogs and bears. Too much high adventure for my ticker.

My 300 winmag puts nice holes in them and they leak oil pretty good. Don't run far either.

I shoot a Remington 710 in 270 Cal 130 btsp and never lost a hog just put it in the boiler room.

Here is the bullet I recovered from the pig I was talking about. Before I went on that one specific trip I thought the barnes-x bullet might be a bit excessive for my 300 winmag, I hadn't used it for hunting before so I wanted to see how it would work, so off I went hunting. I have never recovered a bullet from a big game animal taken with my 300 winmag, so once I found this one I was kind of surprised. I couldn't believe that such a powerful round at about 180-200 yards didn't have a exit wound on a pig. This is just another good example that those darn pigs are so tough.

Federal is the name of the cartridge company...not the name of the type of bullet. So what BULLET brand and type did he use. RG

Federal uses these Brand/types of bullets in their .270Win lineup.

Nosler - Partition
Nosler - Accubond
Sierra - GameKing BTSP
Barnes - Triple Shock X-Bullet
Trophy Bonded - Bear Claw



Read through all the posts and you come up with YES...a .270 with 130gr nosler will be a fine choice for your pig hunt. RG

I use a .270 with 150s and it works fine. Here is the last pig I took with it.

OK so here is the picture. Worked this time! First shot was 150 yards and second was at 75 yards, that one dropped the pig. Enjoy!! The .270 is a blast to shoot pigs with.

Congratulations, that is a handsome pig. The .270 Win. 150 grn. bullets are definitely what the doctor ordered for hogs in .270 caliber. Definitely plenty of horsepower to flatten hogs. Looking at the Federal ammunition ballistics chart, the 150 grn. .270 Win. Nosler partition has over 1 ton of bone crushing impact energy at 100 yds. That is plenty to dispatch even the "Hogzillas". 'Nuff said.

Well back from the pig hunt. We got 3 pigs and had a great time. My nephew dropped a pig on the spot at approximately 50-60 yards with one shot behind the left leg, using a .308 and CoreLokt bullets. My brother-in-law shot a 2nd pig in the side with his 450 Marlin at about 30 yards with those big softnose bullets. There was a huge exit wound and an easy blood trail to follow. That pig ran about a 100 yards downhill before dying and was another 1-shot kill.

I shot a running boar 3 times with .270 Partition bullets (1 right behind the left leg) before he turned to face me and began squaring off. I thought he was going to charge and racked a round into the chamber. The boar finally went down. It was an exciting hunt but those pigs are hard to kill. I'm thinking about taking my .338WM next time or perhaps picking up .45-70 or other suitable buffalo or elephant gun.

My buddy sold his Remington 700 .308 Win. rifle(it was a good rifle and caliber, except it is a sniper version and weighs 13 lbs. empty and is just too heavy for hunting). He bought a Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun(18" factory ported barrel) and shoots SuperHardCast Bear Buster +P loads in it by Garrett Cartridges. The 350 lb. boar he shot in the shoulder with it only ran 30 yds. and laid down and expired and the 250 lb. sow he shot in the shoulder with it went down and never got up. Definitely awesome killing/stopping power. The .458 caliber blunt nose bullets zipping along through the hogs body produces too much trauma for the animal body to absorb. If you ever get one, use the potent loads by Hornady(LeveRevolution) or Buffalo Bore or Garrett or some other Hot factory Loads. The hogs don't even squeal when we smack them in the shoulder with .300 WM(180 grn.), .338 WM(225 grn.) or 45-70+P(420 grn.) loads. They just run a short distance and lay down and expire or just get knocked down and don't get up. By the way, we have never recovered a bullet from these calibers, all were pass thru's, ripping and tearing inside the hog flesh, punching jagged holes in hog bones and blowing out clear all the way thru the other side. The .270 Win. is plenty. Hopefully you will be smacking the hogs with the heavier 150 grn. Nosler Partitions for better penetration next time. With the heavier bullets and tough construction Nosler Partitions, it should be a real winner. 'Nuff said.

I've heard good things about the aftermarket custom bullets in 45-70 caliber and that you need a modern gun to shoot them. So far, Marlin seems to offer the most options and appears to be the leader in this niche market. I've been thinking about one of those guide guns and would love to use it on a buffalo hunt as well.

Shoot pigs with a .270 WSM with 150gr power points all the time with great results. heart shots lung shots texas heart shots head shot neck shots a@@ shots done them all had good results allways and the gun likes the load.

My first pig was taken with .270 Weatherby. The guide I was with saw a pig on the hill about 500yards or so away. The pig goes down the hill and into a low area. After what seemed like a really long time (it wasn't), the pig starts up the hill we are on. I watched the pig trot up the hill right toward us. He's not turning right nor left except to sniff at this and that. I remember thinking I did not want a reverse Texas heart shot and spoil the hams on my first ever pig. Finally he gets so close that the guide stands up. The pig turns and I make my shot. The pig kicks up his hind legs and falls over. By the time we walked the 10 yards over to him he was dead. I had shot thru both lungs and disrupted the artery under the spine. 150 grain Nosler Partion at 3100fps.
I think just about anything would have done the "Sit-Stay-Rollover-PLAY-DEAD" at that range. I was just glad to get the pig. There sure was a whole lot more pig below the grassline that I couldn't see.
