Is a 270 to small to hunt elk with.

Nope, .270 has killed plenty of elk. 150 grain bullet should be about right. There are better cartridges and there will be many opinions, but, if you get one in the lungs that elk is dying.
My 16 yr old son shot a bull this year with a .270 at almost 400 yards and my 11 yr old daughter killed a bull with a 7mm08 that dropped in its tracks.

I killed my first 4 elk with a .270 loaded with 130 gr nosler partitions. four shots. the .270 is plenty for elk.

I agree 100% but I would stick with bullets of at least 140 grains, of a "premium" type construction like barns X, nosler partitions, and my favriote Swift A-Frames. I used the A-Frames on a buck last week the first shot took out 8" of spine before entering the body cavity and still it retained 92% of its weight. I think there worth every penny. Just remember that with whatever bullet you use, it all boils down to one thing SHOT PLACEMENT. Make sure you hit them where it counts and you will do alright.
