Yes, I recall him saying that if given one rifle for hunting, he'll choose the .270 for most (or any) North American games.

I just can't seem to remember if he used these for bears and elk too (following Speck's hesitation).

Jack O'Connor was an exceptional outdoorsman. He was a very good shooter too in real life hunting situations. As I remember he liked to slip the bullet in the ribs. Of course, we will never know if some of the embarassing misses and lost game were ever disclosed or written for the public consumption. We all know of his success stories as that was what was feeding the magazine subscriptions alive. The wounded and lost game if any....who knows??? 'Nuff said.

He must really be a dead shot. I don't think I can even confidently put a knife between the ribs from 3 feet. I like to do this sometime with a Texas pig.

I have only found pointed boolits in .358, not good in tubular mag..however if there are some that exsist and Im just not aware please let me know I would love to continue to hunt with my 35rem as it is a very accurate gun. My hope is that Hornaday will make some in the leverevolution form.

I love my 270 (Browning a-bolt) and I have taken numerous whitetails and a couple of blacktails/pigs. Except for one whitetail, most have dropped where they were shot (poor shot on my part for the one that required tracking). I just bought a 270 short-mag from a buddy who won it at a NWTF banquet (too good of a deal to pass on).

OK, well I found me a .270win and Im gonna doo the paper work for it on Tue. when the shop re-opens. It is a Winchester mod 70 Featherwieght w/ Bushnell 3-9x scope. I cant wait to shoot it. first thing Im gonna do is look for a good hog load, if any of you have a favorite one for hogs please tell.

I haven't reloaded the hideously underpowered .270, but something close..

Put a TSX (130 or 140 gr.) over some 4350 (.05 from the lands) and hit the range. Start at a couple of grains under a book load and work up by 1/2 grain per group. I'm sure you'll have a pigkiller pretty quick. With a little more work, you'll probably have a barnburner load shooting tiny little holes.

Post a picture when you get it.

the thread "Hog hunt" is what I did with my new to me, .270win. I did swap out the Bushnell for a VX-1 Leupold 3-9. Pics will be posted for me soon I think.

The 7mm rem mag is a better all around cartridge: it is just as easy to get ammo, it shoots flat, and it shoots a heavier bullet. And it flat out hammers hogs. Besides its fun to pick on .270 owners like your dad, Nick. Seriously, it's a great cartridge, but buy what you like and shoot the hell out of it.

my dad and me have been using 270 win for 10-20 years for wild boar, he still believe it's one of the best ammo. we are shooting winchester factory ammo 130 grn silvertip and power point in 130 and 150 grn. as long as it hit the right place, they wont run far. you can use elephant gun and still losing the boar if it doesn't hit the vital.

On the barnes bullets for the T/C, I have a T/C contender encore chambered for the Lazzeroni 257 scramjet and all i use is barnes bullets with no problems whatsoever? I shoot a 100 gr. barnes X coated boattail loaded up at 3900 fps. I have not read anything on t/c not advising on using barnes bullets?? Not trying to argue just trying to make sure i am safe! Where did you get you info on that? i'd like to read it? I have flattened many hogs and deer with it as well as varmints.

All those guns are great in that range (.270, .308, .30-06, 7mm)... Although if you were to ask me which I'd be more partial to it would probably be a 7mm STW or RUM. I've taken Elk with my .308 before it's just about shot placement... I know people who shoot pigs with .22-250's~ I think you'll be happy with whatever round you chose!

31 or 32 deer- 30 or 31 shots (one pass through). all 130 gr mostly core-loct or inter-lock
4 elk- 5 shots 130 gr nosler partitions.
don't know how many hogs but most of them were 1 shot kills and 130 gr bullets
Don't let anybody tell you the .270wcf is not enough gunYou might want to google "Russel Annabel" and "Job Johnson" they both wrote a lot of print for the sporting rags over the years. see what people who have actually used them (a lot)on moose and big bears think.

Actually O'Conner did mention bad shots/ misses etc several times in his writting. Have you bothered to read any of it?
Truth is that while O'conner is known for the .270 he only bought his first one so that he and the Mrs. would each have a rifle and not have to trade off. He was actually looking for another .257 bob.
He was a fan of the 30-06 and used one often.
If you ever get some spare time go down to your library and read his work. He doesn't come across at all the way some modern writers would have you believe.
