I know it's no big suprise that we caught something at Big Horn Canyon...... but for a newbie and a hunter with nothing from public land..... we needed some pigs.

Never done this so I'll just report the events.

We got to the ranch and began to make our way down to some pigs we'd seen in the center of the property. On our way down we kept looking on the out lieing hills to see if we could catch a glimpse of any pigs....when the dogs alerted me to some sleeping pigs about 10 feet in front of us. CAhntr got to a safer distance as the pigs were still unaware of our presence. I unlatched my female Pit who I mostly use as a nose and she went to the pigs and waited for one to notice her......I called her back and then they woke up. I unleashed the male and he imeadetly jumped on the smaller boar and did a number on him....but the pigs broke and one was making it's way toward us..... he released his first pig and went after the bigger red boar. They tussled for a minute but my dog went straight for the ears and snout of the pig who by this time had made his way to a steep drop off. The male dog and the boar had gone over the edge with the dog attached all the way down. CAhntr went straight down after them to cut off the pigs retreat and I circled around the ridge and slid down fast on my ass about 20 feet from the action with my female leashed. I unleashed the female to help the male. I was about to rush in to finish off the pig but CAhntr told me to get out so he could get some good photos for the guys at Jesse's
<
. About 20 seconds later I rushed in and dispached of that boar.
After that CAhntr and I tracked down the other boar that had retreated towards the front of the property after the dogs tangled with it and he took it out.
No sooner then we were finished I ran the dogs back to the truck and put them back in thier cages. I come back to CAhntr to find that he had circled around a HUGE Russian sow that was bedded down on a hill side. CAhntr was on one slope and the boar was about 200 yrds away on another slope. CAhntr made his way down to and took a shot at the pig. The pig didn't even move..... at first we thought he missed it but then we went down only to find that he made a perfect head shot right behind the ear. We got the truck and loaded up and went topside to clean the pigs.
The red boar: 270 lbs
The black and white boar: 230lbs
The Russian sow:350 lbs
Our problem: not enough freezer room

While BHCR is small it is straight Up & DOWN and makes for a good workout. I can't really see myself shooting something there but I've taken my cousin there before and I plan on doing it again this march, it works out good for him. Charlie is a pretty cool guy to just to sit down and talk with, he's accomplished alot at his age and has some good knowledge. Congrat's on them porkers, there gonna be some gooooood eating, trust me.

Good story and congrats on the hogs.

One word of advise. I've seen many dog actions with wild hogs. Based on the pictures, the way your dogs worked that red boar, it may not be a good idea to release them on a nasty old boar yet.

Though this was far from a challenging hunt it was a blast! Watching APBT dogs on that big red hog was something else. Very exciting to say the least. He has a beautiful pair of pitts. Very well behaved and tenacious on the pigs.
For me, getting to shoot two pigs was a nice surprise as well. We got to meet some great guys and had a lot of laughs. Most impotantly we got LOTS of meat. I cant wait to eat some.
Thanks again APBT for setting up this trip. I had a great time. Hope I did your dogs justice with the pics.

Oh yeah, if you need freezer room, I'll be glad to take some off of your hands... :)

Congrats again.
