All during the "Best bullet for .30-30" thread I was wondering if a .30-30 wasn't marginal for pigs. In all my vast experience in pig hunthing, uh, let's just say when I shot my pig, I used a .30-06. The first shot was a little low, quartering towards me. The second shot was in the neck and he died.

The hog squealed like a pig jumped in the air, hit the ground on its back, rolled over about 3 times got UP and took off with the dogs in pusuit[/b]
The jumping and rolling sounds impressive but the running doesn't.

My shot took out four or so vertebrae and severed the spine and she was still hauling ass, wow.[/b]
Now that IS impressive ! and yet the pig was maiking for the hills.
So, I guess my question is: Is the .30-30 adequate and I'm just underestimating the hardiness of ole sus scrofa or what ?
Another thing is what about the grizzle sheath on males ? I know it's all about shot plaement, but still ??????
With my experience on one pig, I would think of opting for something bigger. (Another gun is always a beautiful thing) But I have a .30-30 and it's short and sweet.
So if some of you guys who have killed multiple pigs with different guns could chime in, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks
BT

30-30 is plenty for a hog, if you keep your shot in range and hit where you're aiming.

They're just tough animals, and you want to place your shot where it belongs. I hit one at 25 yards with the -06 and had him spin like I'd only nicked him, then run off down the hill, out of sight. He didn't go far before he fetched up against a tree. The .44 in his ear finished the game. When I disassembled him, that rifle shot had obliterated a lung and liquified his heart. Tough critter.

Bottom line, a 150 or 170gr core-lokt out of a 30-30 will anchor anything that walks if you keep it inside 100 yards and do your part with the aiming.

Speck hit the nail on the head. Boars are tough but a .30-30 hits hard and is plenty powerful as long as you mind the range of your shots. Under 100 yards you should be golden! Good luck and shoot straight!

you could wahck 'em with a .458 in the wrong place and they'll get up or you could shoot 'em with a .22 in the right place and they go nappy (i know, i know but it's true. seen it done @ 30 yards-100lb. hog, earhole). worry about being able to shoot not what your shoot'in. you get some cannon out there you can't handle and ass blast one, your gonna have a rodeo which can turn un-fun real quick. know and practice your abilities, shoot free hand, kneeling, sitting, etc. at targets at ranges you expect during hunting, and buy a range finder or practice your distance estimation.
30 30 is fine for hogs at or under 2 hundo if you can hit 'em right...
BTW-grew up whack'in 'em with a 243. just hit 'em good, and they'll stop.
Also, saw a buddy shoot one with a 458. he hit it in the head at 60 yards...it removed the top portion of the head and sucked the brain clean out!!! it was amazing, total lobotimy (sp?)...
