It does sound like an awesome deal. I put my concerns in the other thread, although if it's 300 win mag, then you can pretty much erase what I said. The 300 win mag is a pretty versatile round too, and would make a great deer, hog, and elk gun.
I can't remember... do you reload? If it's the Weatherby magnum, it'll be a little harder and a lot more expensive to get ammo.
Agree with Speck if it's a Win mag, it might be a good deal, even if it's a Weatherby (which have very pretty stocks, but I'm not impressed with their actions or triggers at all). If it's a 300 Weatherby mag, I'd opt for a good 30-06 instead........
Yeah, it's got about the pretiest stock I've ever seen...
I don't reload... yet. But based on my habits, i'm going to have to take it up! It is a 300 Win Mag, not 300 Wby Mag. When I posted first, I thought because it was a weatherby it had to be a Wby Mag... My friend corrected me. And good thing too... Wby ammo is OUTRAGEOUS!!!
Freedivr, What don't you like about the trigger and action? How does it compare to Savage?
Worst case scenario, I buy a beautiful gun for $500, use it for a season, and sell it for $800! It'll make more than my 401k... he he he.
For $500, there's NOTHING I don't like about that gun or the action!!!! I would say buy that sucker in a heartbeat for $500. Make sure to get an OK to check it out at the range (it might be shooting 5" groups, who knows?) before you seal the deal, though. There's some reason he's selling it so cheap.....
I just don't think the action of the Weatherby win mag that I shot was very smooth compared to "run of the mill" rugers, winchesters and remingtons that I've shot. And the trigger was vanilla/boring/hard to describe really, but I just couldn't establish a "let off" on it; it was just all the same pull on the squeeze until the firing pin hit if you know what I mean. On most of my shooters, I can pull on the trigger, then feel a slight creep immediately before the sear lets loose. Kinda like a hair trigger for the last 1 lbs. of pull. I like that in a trigger, maybe it's just me on that one, and I'd bet a good gunsmith could create that in any trigger. BTW, make sure you have a gunsmith check it out for headspace, also.
Sounds like you might have a real sweet deal there......
I've known him for some time, I'm sure he'll let me shoot it again.
Headspace?
BTW, I know what you mean about that milisecond of perfect weightlesness RIGHT before the sear lets fly... that's nice! You're right it is straight pull and then it fly's with no warning. But at least the pull isn't too much!
just get out there and shoot a pig already...... 270, 308. 7mm, 30.06, 300, who the hell cares.... its not the gun but the hunter that will get the pig
Hey Shot, do you have any property you'll let me hunt on? I'll shoot a pig and then shut the hell up, but if you don't have any good pig land for me to hunt on, then all I can do is wait and plan for the POR in 2 months...
You see, when I stop typing is really up to you, buddy
