So.. ......... I purchased an extra barrel for my H. S. Precision take down rifle just before they became priced out of my league. My original caliber is 270 Win which I truely think was a great choice. Knowing that I would only ever be able to afford one more caliber for that rifle , I decided on the 338 Win Mag. My reasoning was I am hoping to eventually hunt elk, moose, and possibly brown bears . After reading numerous hunting articles, and sifting through a few relaoding manuals and talking to one of the techs at H S Precision I decided on the 338 Win Mag. My original choise was one of the newer 300 Mags but he felt the 338 Win Mag would be a better choice. He also mentioned the possibility of needing to purchase hard to find ammo as oppose to ammo that most places would carry. Haven't had the opportunity to try it in the field yet but with near maxium loads and the installed brake (yes I know quite a few people hate them) shooting it at the range is very pleasant. Would anyone say I made a MISTAKE in choosing the 338 Win Mag.

Nope

So you have a 270 and a 338? That should cover everything!

The .338 Win Mag is never a mistake. You made a solid choice. You are now set.

I agree with bpnclark. You've got it covered. the .338 Win Mag is a great caliber. If I get my pronghorn tag for CO That's what I'll be taking, a .270 and a .338 Win Mag.

270 and 338. I'd say you have the bases covered for anything North America has to offer. Not sure what the HS tech means "purchase hard to find ammo as oppossed to that which most places would carry" Midway, Natchez,Midsouth and Graf and Sons all carry anything you might want in 338 Win.
Good Shooting, sidepass

I guess I am no English major. What I meant to say was it would be easier to replace 338 Win Mag ammo if I somehow lost my ammo on a hunting trip as oppose to replacing one of the newer 300 mags or 338 ultra mag. Not that anything is wrong with either of those calibers just that 338 Win Mag is much more common. I hope that clarifies it a bit.

You can probably find 338 win mag ammo in just about every hardware store across the West.
Good choice.

I built up a .338 WM for nearly the reasons you suggested. I shot it not longago and I started thinking about getting rid of my .308( silly thinking I know). Great caliber shoice.

I use both of those calibers for the same reasons you mentioned. They're great calibers and you can find ammo anywhere.
