Any of you guys killed a pig before with a .357 handgun. Have you killed any large game animal with a .357 handgun?

I have killed a bear with my .357. Died just fine.
I have killed a pig with my longbow. Died too, but charged me first.
Next time I kill a pig with my longbow, I'll bring the .357

Of course, bigger is always better. But if you know your guns and your shooting's limitations (25 yards will give you 5" groups from what you say, and I'd keep it that) a .357 will get the job done. The longer barrel will help as well.

Good Luck,

Yes I have been on well over 100 hunts where a 357. Mag was the only handgun available. I have been on several hogs that were shot with a 357 mag (up close and personal like) that didnt get the job done. one particular Hog I had to step and fetch like my azz was on fire and my head was a catchen to get away from a pissed off boar with 5 rounds in it. its illegal here, but many hogs have been killed with a 22 cal. Shot placement is Key. Neither of the calibers are my preferred choice.

The 357 has since been retired for a 44 mag.

i recant my post above about not using the .357,if you are indeed hunting the bighorn,
i think you could probably use a .380auto and be just fine, shot placement is the key,
but if you get a bad shot ,just stay on um,you'll find um

be sure to post up the money shots when the deal is sealed

My question is--for bow hunting of any type--how do you plan for the unfortunate "bad shot"--or if you do pin them down--do you use something like a revolver to finish the job?[/b]

Nobody plans for a bad shot. And often, if you archery hunt, you can't take a gun legally. (Deer archery season in CA and even some pig opportunities, like the one I had when I took my long bow.) Long story short, you put another arrow in the animal as quickly as possible.

I once hunted with a guy--mule deer--and he took one through the neck. It piled up at about 100 yards but took about 10 minutes to die. Didn't bug him. Personally...I never want to do/see that again.[/b]

As soon as the animal is weak enough where you think it can't run again (or charge you), you should put another arrow in it. No reason your guy could not have done so.

Mikey, let us know what you chose to take and how it turned out.

Merry Christmas!

Farmerdoug, I don't believe a bow was one of the options Mikey had to go with.

On the remainder of your post...

If a discussion rubs you wrong, it is generally best not to interject yourself into it. Now let's keep this thread on the topic... the choice of weapon for Mikey's hunt at Big Horn Canyon.

If anyone cares to start a new thread regarding the pros and cons of fenced hunts, then feel free.

My bad! Sorry for the off topic. Definately use the 357. My cousin went there a few years back and said he "stalked" within 25yrds and felt bad for using his deer rifle. If you too can "stalk" within 25 yrds, use the 357.

The ballistics for .357 is for varmint. Pig/Boar hunt is a big game. I will use a caliber for big game when pig hunting. No more no less. (my opinion)
