You have gotten some sound advice here. The price is not bad on the GP so buy it but get a 44 anyway when you can. Someone mentioned getting a 4 5/8 barrel 44. While they are a great gun in a tight spot, the shorties are much harder to shoot if not accustom to them, I am assuming you are not a pistolero or you would already have them. Most of them I have had have been sent back to Ruger for higher front blade to be installed just to keep them on the paper. They have a fair amount of muzzle jump with heavy loads and will give a novice a flinch they will never shake. I have had the 4 5/8" on up and use the 7 1/2 Blackhawk Hunter for hunting, pushing 300gr XTP's with 21grn H110, Itll make em stumble if you are in a tight spot and pop them with a quick couple of rounds. Recently shot that .480 . Might have to sell the SSRH .44mag and turn it over into the 480. Sweet round. Light enough to keep shooting it and enjoy it, but a lot more punch than the 44. Decisions, decisions.

Raider,

Don't know anyone yet who's received the .500. It was all the buzz at the SHOT show last year, of course. The one I handled (didn't get to shoot... dangit) weighed about a ton.

It does promise to be a killing machine, perfect for hogs, bear, or elk... but the price tag ought to shock you, if you can stand to get on the waiting list.

The Southern Ca Gun Co in San Diego has the 500 for $800 - no waiting list.

Course I don't have $800 so it does me no good.

Hicntry, I love that picture! I thought it would be ok since it doesn't actually swear, but someone didn't like it so it was pulled.

Oz,

I imagine Jesse or one of the mods pulled it. They've had to get pretty strict about the use of "f-bombs", since so many people have tried to get around it on the site by using the first letter, separated by a couple of spaces or characters, and ending with the K... like the shirt the kid in your pic was wearing.

I'm sure it was nothing personal, but they have to be consistent. You can imagine how time consuming and aggravating it would be if someone had to review each and every case individually.

Bottom line, as desribed in the site rules when you registered, the site is supposed to be "family-friendly".

By the way, $800 isn't a terrible price for that .500. I think you ought to grab it, and bring it to the Ham Slam so I can shoot it.

hicntry, found it on some website that I can't remember. I laughed so hard, and have always loved Jim Beam, so I had to use it. But I can email it to you as an attachment if you'd like. PM me with your email and i'll send it over.

you say that so nonchalant... If I had $800 to my name, I wouldn't spend it on a gun that's ammo that costs $1 a round
<
... then again, I've been known to do many things that put me out in the "doghouse." That sure would be a sweet gun!

Notice, of course, that I wasn't suggesting that I go out and spend $800 on a hand cannon.

Nosir. I spend too much time in the doghouse just for spending gas money to go hunting. If I kicked out for a gun like that... well, I'd have to get the doghouse re-zoned for permanent dwelling.

Isn't the .480 Ruger supposed to have about the same down-range energy as the .454 but not nearly as punishing recoil? ...not as flat of a shooter though.

....just looked it up. It's closer to the .44 than .454 or .500

These folks have you some great advice. But I'm a die hard 44 magnum fan. When out in the woods, I carry my Mag-Na-Port custom Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag. I carried this gun when we lived in Alaska loaded with some stiff 320 grain cast bullets and I never worried about a thing. I'm sure if loaded properly the 357 would do the job on hogs, but I like big heavy bullets.
