me and the wife are going to SA for a plains game hunt. im taking a 30-06 with 165 gr fed fusion bullets. the wife is taking a 7mm-08 and her rifle really likes the 140 gr barnes tsx. so my question is what do you all think of the wifes set up of the 7-08 with the 140 gr barnes tsx?

Catchdog,
I think your good with the 7MM-08 over there....It's been said here before...Its better to make a great shot with a gun your comfortable with, than make a bad shot with a gun that your scared/not comfortble with.My buddy was born and raised over in SA and has an outfitting business and he loves his 7mm-08 and has killed all plainsgame with it and a few others too.Good Luck on your hunt and remember shot placement is key!

thanks for your reply. i have no dought about the 7mm-08. my question was more about the 140 gr tsx. i was told buy a guide or ph over there that the tsx doesnt open up good on the smaller animals like lmpala . my wifes rifle will shoot most ammo good but it shoots the 140 gr tsx the best. i have seen a 140 gr rem core-lot break apart on a 100 pound bears shoulder from a 7-08. when a tsx went trough about 18-20 inches of a 350 pound bear. so i think the tsx is the heavy hitter but will it open up on impala and make a quick kill. i do have some 100 gr bullets loaded up for her 7-08 that shoot good and only hit 1 inch lower than the tsx at 100 yards that she could take for the smaller stuff. but i would rather just take two boxes of the tsx if they will do the job well.

Catchdog,
I took over my 220 Swift and shot tripple shocks through it and never got a bullet back on the smaller game impala, fallow deer, springbuk, etc. everyone went right threw the animal and the exit hole wasnt any bigger than the entrance hole. But that was a 53 Gr. bullet flying at over 3600fps.My buddy and I both shot the Swift A-frame over there and I now shoot it here for all my elk, deer hogs...absolutelly love this bullet...performance,accuracy,and weight retention are awesome....Good Luck!

For plains game you should be fine with that caliber and bullet. Yo'll probably find that your PH would prefer a bit heavier bullet, more like155-160 grain, but the TSX should do a great job. Shots won't be very long, with 200 yards being a pretty long shot over there.

I wouldn't shoot an eland with that caliber and bullet, but wouldn't hesitate to shoot most others with it. My son killed a big kudu with a .270 and 150 grain Nosler Partitions, and I've killed zebra and sable witht that same combo. You'll be fine with what you're taking.

I'm a 7mm-08 owner and I think you've got the right combo. Although I took my 7mag and 375 the times I went, I think the TSX in that weight will whack just about any of the plains game. As stated before, I wouldn't shoot eland, zebra or blue wildebeest with it (unless it was close range and perfect broadside) but just about anything else should go down. Good luck.:toast-yellow:

I shot pretty much everything except zebra with the 7x57 and a 160 partition at 2750 fps. The 7mm08 is pretty much the same thing. The 140 TSX will be just fine on pretty much any plains game.
