Turned out to be a nice day today. Overcast with drizzle here and there. We glass from a few spots we've hunted in the past and saw a total of four herds. They're still all scattered and bunched up in small herds. Will try to post the elk pics later.

Here's a few areas we would hike to. They're about 5-10 miles from where we are standing.

Sorry the photos are kinda blurry. We couldn't get any more closer to the herds. Due to the clear cuts we're in, we could only get to within 400 yrds and I've got my camera zoomed to the max.

Sorry couldn't get them all in one pic but this herd had 16 heads total. 1-4x, 1-5x4, 4-spikes, rest are cows and calves. We ranged them to be at 436 yrds.

I'm gettin tired of loading the rest of the photos so this will be it for now. I'm pumped for Aug. 29th opening. They're bugling this morning so I hope they keep it up. Oh by the way, I didn't get the other two herds on camera due to the down pour but there was only 3 in one group and 5 in the other besides what is in the upper photos.

Looks like you had a productive scouting trip, just seeing your pictures gets my blood moving, I bet you can’t wait to get out there and arrow one of those bulls. Good Luck! By chance were you in the Tioga unit? The pictures look a lot like what we hunt in the rifle season, (Tough to hunt).

Thanx. I can't wait. We were in the Wilson unit. This is the same area I shot my bull last year. Yeap, really tough to hunt but I still enjoy it very much. Good luck to you also.

Every year is different. It depends a lot on the weather. Last year we found them bugling right around the same time this year during our scouting trips. The weather has been a real role play. Few weeks ago in a row, we've been in the 100's and just all of a sudden, we dropped to the 70's. At night it's been around 50's. We've just had our first few rain in a long while now so that's what I think triggered those bulls.

From my report of observing this week, the bigger bulls aren't herding up harems yet. We only saw spikes and rag horns challenging each other. I'm giving it one more week and probably go back the week before opening just to see what's going on. We know of two other bulls in that herd and didn't see them, so I think they're still alone in the dark timber muscling up.

You must be hunting the Chetco, Applegate, Rogue, Sixes, Powers, Evans Creek, Dixon, Melrose, or Tioga units down there. Those are really good productive units but I can't speak for those units, if bulls are acting the same as the ones up north. The weather down there is usually a bit more warmer than here so you never know. But IMO, any week is a good week to hunt these Rosies. If you can, hunt the 2nd week but if not, 3rd week should still be fine. From past experience, these bulls will bugle till the end of season. Have fun and good luck to you, hunterdoug. We'll wait for the pix and
:welcome sign: to the Rosie Garden.

Nice. Well sorry to get you thinkin bout elk but everyone else on here is making me think bout blacktail. I'm jealous that everyone's out hunting blacktail and I'm here still counting my days. LOL. Let me see, hmm, 15 more days I believe.

Best of luck to you guys and I'll be waiting to see some pics. There's lots of Rosies this year so you'll see and kill somn.

hunterdoug,

That's arite. The latter part is still productive if not, even more. Well you're in a good unit that's really untouchable from many city boy hunters so you'll bound to see those bulls again. I wish you the best while playing tag again and this time tag em.

I'll be out next Mon. or Tues. again to check up on the herds and will give an update on activities. Looks like our weather is shooting back up to the 90's this week so hopefully it'll cool down next week.
