Terror attacks force hunt cancellation on CA. military installations.

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Last month's East Coast terrorist attacks have prompted the state to cancel fall hunting seasons at two California military installations.

The California Department of Fish and Game on Friday canceled the tule elk hunt at the Fort Hunter Liggett military installation in Monterey County and a public deer hunt at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

The base commander's decision to cancel the elk hunt at Fort Hunter Liggett was made due to a "continued heightened state of readiness" at the base, according to a statement from the base.

All hunting and fishing privileges at the base have been suspended until further notice as well as access to any other installation areas that are usually open to the public.

The elk hunt was scheduled to run from Nov. 8 through Jan. 1. The department said it was notifying the 34 tule elk tag holders of the cancelation.

The archery-only deer hunt at Camp Pendleton was to begin Saturday.

The 380 military personnel chosen to participate in the hunt through the DFG's deer tag drawing will still be allowed to hunt on a limited basis because they have security clearance to enter the base. The 100 civilian tag holders are being offered a refund or an exchange for an available deer tag to hunt off the base.

Six hunts were scheduled for military bases this year. All have been completed or curtailed except for the ongoing hunt at Vandenberg Air Force Base. That hunt is scheduled to run through Dec. 30, but remains subject to cancellation.

I was one of the unfortunate ELK tag holders.  John Fisher of the DFG wants all tag holders to write a letter to the DFG Commission stating that they would settle for a replacement tag for next years hunt if the Army reopens FHL to hunting.  You still will get reimbursed for this years tag fee.

Send the letters to John Fisher at:

DFG
1416 9th st
Sacramento, CA 95184

He will present the letters to the Comission himself and lobby for each successful tag holder to get the same tag next year.  He needs a good response.
