so heres the deal. my business partner's family has a ranch. not that big (in hunting terms) but all kinds of wildlife do pass through the area.
there is one ditch, i guess you could call it (about 15-20 ft deep in areas), that runs three-ways throughout the ranch. we've jumped pigs, coyotes, and even a lion once out of these ditches. In last few encounters with pigs and coyotes, i was so close i missed multiple shots.
finding them in the scope... also the trajectory of the bullet shooting downward at such a close range (were talking about 10 yards usually)... anyways i figured today I would pack the mini-14.
so loaded up with some 65 gr hollow points. nice and short, light, iron sights, plus i can get off a few quick rounds if necessary.
well it worked out perfectly.
I worked my way up each of the two tributaries, so to push anything into the main ditch. (which has a dead end). stopping every few yards to listen. it real dense at the bottom so listening is the only way to go. anyways... so about half way I hear some snorting, and heavy breathing... i take it real slow... i can pinpoint the sounds coming from one specific patch of brush. toss in a dirt claud (sp?) with a super arch and shoulder the rifle before it drops... sure enough, out bolts a large pig... i'm catching quick glances, but manage stay on it and put one behind the shoulder (a little high though). it reals around and actually starts to go straight up the side of the ditch about 7 yards away from me. thats where i put two in the head and one more through the lungs. it tumbled right down to the bottom.
the semi-auto definitely came in handy. of course i would not recommend a .223 for pigs... especially ones this size. but i knew if i was going to get a shot at all, it would be within 30 yards.
here are a few pics. i'm guessing she was over 200, but not sure. it sure as hell wasn't easy to drag her up the side of the ditch!!
as well as some random other wildlife i saw while out this morning.
looking good for it just being feb/march
golden eagle?
