I'm not really a big shed collector, but I seem to stumble over them a lot. Last weekend at Tejon Ranch, we hunted the North Side and I found myself deep in the heart of elk country. At Tejon, these are Rocky Mountain Elk, not Tules or Roosevelts.

Anyway, I found a bunch, but only messed around with these two.

My bow, in the pic, is 60" long. The coolest thing about this shed is that I'm fairly certain I met the previous owner. His "whale tails" are much more pronounced now, but the conformation seemed to match up.

This one was THICK! I started carrying it around, but since I was hunting and it weighed about 30 lbs (felt like), I leaned it against a bush and left it for the next guy to find.

In another area I found four or five more sheds, but didn't bother to pick them up or photograph them. Several were down in deep draws and I didn't feel like dropping down there just to look at antlers. They ranged from a little spike with brow tines to a couple of real monsters. I'm no good at scoring, but I know what a 320 looks like and some of these were much better than that.

Cool finds.

I've walked around with a couple for half a day before. Can't bring myself to leave em.

Kirk, give me a call and I can tell you just about where they are.

I left that big one leaning in that bush like you see in the photo because I had about eight pigs in the draw below me. When I was putting the camera back in my pack, they moved out across an opening about 30 yards away. Never fails. The minute you stop hunting to do something else, the critters show up!

SPECK THAT IS ONE BEUTIFUL BOW. I DO THINK YOU ARE NUTS FOR NOT GATHERING THE SHEDS THOUGH. I WOULDVE BROKE MY BACK HAULING THEM OUT.

ITS WIERD, SOME GUYS HAVE THE ADDICTION AND SOME DONT. ALL MY LIFE I HAVE GONE CRAZY OVER ANTLERS. I WISH I WASNT LIKE THAT TO BE HONEST.

WOW Spec,

That shed you left behind is a beauty. I think I would have hauled it out somehow but awfully nice of you to alert another JHO where he can pick it up. That's what makes this site so great.

It was kinda hard to leave that big one behind, but it's kinda hard to bowhunt with one hand full of a 30lb elk antler. Gotta prioritize.

If I'd been wearing my pack frame, I would've tied it on and carried it home.

By the way, Kirk, I left the first one leaning against the skinning shed there at the cabin. It's probably still there, unless one of the guides took it.

Dang Speck. Nice find. You always find the good stuff. I wonder if you would have seen those hogs a bit soon if you hadn't been looking for sheds. Just joshin' there Bubbie.

No, you're dead right. If I hadn't been screwing around, taking pictures of that big shed, I would have been sneaking down into the draw where those pigs were.

It's right above where Orso shot that boar, by the way.

Being a true shedhunter at heart I think I'd have forgotton the hogs and gathered those sheds plus looked for more.Send me to Canada or a Western state for sheds and I'd be next to heaven.

You would have loved the area of Tejon Ranch that I was on, then. I spotted at least a half-dozen good elk sheds just hunting through a couple of areas.

Not sure how they'd feel about someone coming out just to hunt sheds, but it would certainly be a great spot to do so.
