Went for a hunt with Flatbroke and some family, to see if we could get the dogs on a hog. Started the day at day break as usual. We put two dogs out at first light. Within ten minutes one hit a fresh track. We heard barking up the side of a steep brushy hill. Two more dogs were on the way. The barking stopped, and after ten minutes one dog returned. It took about 1 1/2 hours and a bunch of driving around to locate the other two dogs. But still no hog. After re grouping, we made a hike down through a nice canyon. Plenty of good habitat, but no fresh sign.
We decided to check another spot. As we rolled into the area, two of the dogs got pretty excited. We put them out, to see if they could find something. I found some fesh sign, but nothing the dogs could run. We roaded them for a while but nothing. It was about time to go, but we wanted to check for sign in another area. We loaded the dogs up and drove towards the area. As we got close one dog seemed like he may have been winding a hog, so we put him out. He was out hunting, as we drove along in the truck. After a few minutes we spotted 5 or 6 hogs bailing off the ridge, into the brush, with the dog hot on their trail. We jumped out of the truck and turn three more dogs out. They went down the hill after the hogs. Things got a little scattered at this point. I could hear barking in two different directions. I went to the left, and Flatbroke went to the right. When I reached the barking I went to, one dog had a nice little boar bayed, by himself. After a couple moments my brother in law, and father in law showed up with Flatbrokes new dog, who had not been on a hog yet. He got right in and joined the other dog, in no time. Meanwhile Flatbroke had three dogs with him, but they had mutiple hogs going. The brush was so thick, the dogs looked like they were barking at bushes. He called on the radio looking for the other dogs, but we were busy taking pictures, and video footage. After we killed the boar, we began to make our way to him. He was so far I could not hear the dogs barking. I keep getting hung up it was taking for ever to amke our way to him. He was having plenty of his own fun. The hogs and dogs broke a couple of times, so they had their share of working through some tough country. Seemed the dogs were not getting teamed up on the same hog, so he could get a good shot in the brush. I finally cut the other two dogs loose, I believed they could hear the barking. I then made it to a road, where my father in law had wisely gone. Shortly after that, I could hear the barking, and grunting, and squealing. Then a gun shot confirming another hog down. The three dogs Flatbroke had with him got teamed up on one hog, and gave him the shot before the other two dogs arrived. It ended up being a great day, with the dogs catching two hogs.
