Personally, I like digital cameras, especially for experimenting. With just a couple memory cards, I can take hundreds of photos on a single outing. I've got a modest-priced Sony digital camera with a fair amount of advanced features.
The best part is that I can take a dozen pictures of the same subject with all different types of settings. Then I can take them home, download them immediately and see what I did right or wrong. It's a great learning experience. Of course, there's also something to be said for taking a beautiful picture on film. So I keep a regular film camera handy, too. But with the high cost of film and developing, and the decreasing cost of highquality printers and photopaper, I'm very happy with my digital camera.

What is the price range you are looking at? Digitals take pretty good photos for looking at on the computer and such. If you want to make posters and stuff then you will have to buy a very pricey digital or use film.
For learning how to shoot digitals, nothing beat a digital in my opinion. You never have to pay developing fees unless you want a specific picture printed out. Also, you can take as many pictures as you want to. You can view them practically instantly. I got a digital last year and love it.

YH - Since you can already use a computer and no doubt were raised with it, I suggest you get a basic digital camera and also some edit software like Photoshop Elements 2. You then will have your own digital darkroom. The fastest way to learn would be to take a class in basic photography (and 1 for the software) so you learn how to adjust exposure and also composing photos and basic skills like keeping the camera steady and how to use depth of field, etc. If you learn the basics you should be able to find more experienced photographers to share their knowledge. People sense and respect someone with a high level of interest and will respond even if you are a beginer. Most of all have fun with it. WB
