Meagher County Montana. I understand that there are more elk than cattle in the county. Some places are brow tine only so there are some okay bulls there. It isn't a trophy hunt, but it is good elk hunting and you don't have to pay the trophy fees either...

If you pay for a guide, tresspass fee, or consulting fee like Antlerquest's, you'll get into the elk much faster than going in colder without as much information regardless of which state or unit.

But, part of the fun can be picking the type of habitat or country you want to hunt before looking at success rates. If you like aspens and lodgepoles, why hunt PJ habitat? Visa-versa if you're a desert rat. Mix it up if you like both. Also, elk live in easy to hunt terrain and the nastiest of terrain--your physical capabilities also factor in.

Also, part of the decision should be driven by when do you want to hunt elk--during the rut in their summer habitat, winter habitat, or migration corridors. If you pick the rut for example, then you're looking at primitive weapons or wilderness rifle hunts if you want to hunt elk yearly or long waits for rifle tags.

I agree with others that hunting the same unit is going to increase your odds all else being equal. But, by the same token it's sure a whole lot of fun to hunt different areas periodically especially if you get a kick out of experiencing different parts of the west.

I've mostly hunted different areas every year looking for greener pastures and new experiences. I've gotten into elk every year. Part of what you learn about elk hunting in general applies to anywhere else you go.

Zimm......

IMHO, the absolute best deal out there for us out-of-state hunters, already mentioned earlier, is hooking up with Jeff Coldwell of Antlerquest. Antlerquest has a package that sums up any preference points you have, your physical abilities, your goal (bull elk, meat cow, Goat, big Muley, etc.) and does your scouting for you, basically, and for a very low fee taboot. BTW, I have met Jeff and he's more than an outstanding human in all ways, I would bet the house on him every time. Also note that Jeff is building up this business (I believe he's now in his 3rd year)and I think he's going above and beyond the call to do his very best to ensure his clients have the highest possibility for success.

Here's his new website (updated for 2005. Note; some of the pictures are of and from his 2004 clients). Best of luck to you in getting your bull!

Hey Zimm.........yep, got boat (wanna buy one? It's for sale.....check JHO classified ads......absolutely perfect for inshore diving), but it's for sale and I'm keepin it in the garage until sold. Spring diving for me won't start until March for sure around a couple favorite spots off the P.V. cliffs for WSB and calicos....

Just curious.....are you old enough to remember a good dive shop down your way (off of Newport Blvd & Coast Hwy) called The Aquatic Center? I think it's still there, it's changed hands once or twice since my father in law sold his 1/2 of it in 1983. Used to be the best shop in So. Calif (IMHO) for just about everything.

P.S. Whatta ya using for a shooter? Here's a lousy pic of some of mine, my WSB shooter being the Sampson Long Tom in the middle.....super, super gun, don't make em like this anymore for sure.....won't drop more than 1" at 30'. 68" long 3/8 dia. spring steel shaft, four bladed Sampson tip, 65# pull on the rubber, blah blah. Has a nice little kick to it... (obviously my favorite, ya think?).........

Wow nice collection of guns! I got an old JBL that is my loaner. I use a AB Biller 48" 2 band with a reel. Under powered for sure for big fish! Hence I am looking for a blue water gun now. Maybe a nice Riffe. Any suggestions?

I remember a dive shop in Newwpy at Superior and PCH...is that the same one?

Nice little whaler...great price will go quick! Goin bigger?

If Superior was the road coming down the hill from Costa Mesa, then yep, that's the shop. It's been 10 years since I've been in that neck of da woods, there used to be a car wash and a Restaurant called "Howards" in that little strip mall area with the Aquatic Center.

Sorry, I just have my tried and true old dive gear, not up on all the new spearguns.........contact SDHNTR.....his bro is up on all the new dive guns for sure.

Nope, no more boats for me in the near future.

Limited draw hunt zones 100 and 22 in Wyoming give the best chance at a decent bull. Hard to draw though. A general tag elk hunt up around Shell Wyoming is pretty good as well.

If I were to hunt Colorado I would hunt up around Maybell or down in the San Juans.
39, and 40. I have killed two bulls in 40. For 40 check out copemans tomb, and the canyons surounding sunlight mesa. I have never hunted 39, but have glassed them in 39 from my Xgirlfreinds house outside of shell, and earlier in the hunting season on the back side of antelope bute.

If you want anymore scoop on the Big horn area send me an email

Thanks All for the information...Okay off goes my application to CO today...It's the mid October hunt where you can hunt 3, 4, 5, 214, & 301. Jeff at Antlerquest has been AWESOME with communication and we are going to use his service to get us in a good area.

Good luck all!
