Yup, Rifleman you got it. Did you read the same mag as me?

One thing I found off in the article was it said California claimed theur hunters kill more hogs than deer. A quick check of the big game booklet has 7,770 hogs taken in 2001/2002 vs. 17,014 bucks taken in 2002 in CA.

Anybody know who is the top hog state of the 3?

Jesse,

Nope, I didn't read it in an article...just going from memory and speculation.

Yeah, that is way off, isn't it? Perhaps the writer confused a higher success rate with higher harvests...who knows?

I will defer my answer for your second question until some other people get a chance to answer; I wouldn't want to be a spoil-sport!

Now that other folks have had the chance to answer, I'm gonna chime in and say that the ranking for the highest hog harvest is in the order I listed the top three states in my first post...TX (1st), CA (2nd) and FL (3rd).

I would have guessed Tennessee would be in there also.

A friend's dad was telling me today how his co-workers back in Texas took pigs in with knives. I don't believe knieves are a legal method of taking in CA. Consequently, it appears to me that Texas has more lax hunting restrictions than CA. Thus, I would guess that TX is no 1, then CA and then FL. Those guesses are based on hunting restrictions, state size and population.

No, unfortunately knives are not legal here. Fish and Game has no reason to prohibit their use, but they do anyway. "When in doubt, ban it." is our state's motto.

Hogs are regulated more as livestock in TX than as a game animal; you can shoot them, stab them, hunt them at night, use a spotlight, trap them, snare them, hunt them by helo...you name it and it can just about be done. And you know what, Texas still has more hogs than we do and the population in Texas still continues to increase.

Ya'll only have 7700 recorded for that year? I bet between people I know and myself, we probably come close to that ourselves.lol Im just a weekend hunter (not by choice, but cause of work) And i will probably kill 150 hogs this year. The laid back laws are the main reason for such high numbers. That and the Number of hogs. But, they have been trying to take our privelages away alot lately.

I woud think that there is no way to accurately know the number of hogs killed due to poachers and unrecorded kills.

How many hogs are estiated to be in CALIFORNIA?
I think TEXAS is over 2 or 3 million.

Enough ramblin for now..
