My brother calls me up and say that he wants to go boar hunting.
We only have a small window of time to go, so everything was pretty rushed.
Our guide had openings so long as it is before deer season b/c he books up.
He said that w/the economy and gas being what it is, he hasn't had clients out in a couple months.
I figure that is good b/c the pigs would be calm.

This is a rifle hunt.

BTW, I had to get nonlead ammo, and soon. Turner's was all out.
Fortunately I was able to get some online, just in time to check them out at the range.
Rifles shot fine and we would meet Friday to go meet our guide and get set up.

I had to get everything arranged in under 2 weeks.

Geez, Friday PM traffic on the 101 is a bear.

We met up w/our guide a little late for a Friday PM hunt, but as soon as we got to camp we saw bucks.
As my brother said , some of those bucks will be missing a few friends in a week.

We saw a good number of bucks.
My kid kept wishing we were deer hunting.

It was his first hunt other than local stuff.

I know this is a boar hunting story, but it's fun to see deer.
Hunt boar, see pigs; hunt deer, see pigs.
There's a bedded buck to the left of the standing buck.
I am sure you all saw that, though.

We saw some pigs too.

While looking at bedding sites, we spotted movement.
They started to move out and head to feed.
They were a ways off, so we couldn't tell for sure of their size.
We were able to get around these guys and cut them off.
I like Marty b/c he doesn't push a shot.
We took our time, and Marty gave me the choice of whether to shoot or not.
We let these ones go grow.

I have hunted w/ marty since he was working for Eldon.
I was just a teenager then.
Now he is a grandpa, and my brother and I have families.

You are right, Mel, we got into hogs.
<
Plenty of hogs...
I brought two tags too
<

Those elk were awesome to see.
Those Tule elk are a sign of what great conservationists hunters are.
Daddy 63, you are right.
I didn't want to get into trouble for advertising.

First morning out we went to a ridge and Mar spotted hogs.
They were all headed out of the barley and into the cover.
We waited to let them settle down and see if some stragglers were still on the move.
After a while we went to them.

We headed out and found the bedded in cover.
They were well hidden. My brother stayed up top to cover any that got above us while Mary and I went to investigate. Marty took me right to them. Too bad they were on trhe wrong side of the wire fence. We left them hoping to get them if they came back down in the afternoon.

We did a little more looking around and tried another plan.
My brother, kid (who btw was there as an observor) and Marty would cover a saddle while I went down to a game trail that led to a tree that the pigs sometimes bed under. After giving them a bit of time to get into position I started. Afte a while I could see the tree Marty spoke of, and boy didi it look like someplace pigs would bed under. I decided to take a pic, but wait! there was movement. I got my rifle ready and all of a sudden hogs burst out from under the tree. I shouted "pigs!Pigs!Pigs!" to alert the guys up top. One pig ran up above me and I shot it. The rest of the herd ran up straight to the saddle and looked as they would bowl over the guys in the saddle. They must have seen the guys b/c they split up and ran around them. My brother dropped one just about in its tracks.
Here is my son and I w/the pig I shot. They came out of that canyon below us.

The pig I shot wasn't big, but I was happy nonetheless.
I didn't have to cut up and pack out this one on my back.
Just a bit of a drag. My friend tells me that I always need to drag animals. I don't ever get the shots were they drop right by the road.

My brother's pig was bigger than mine.
The pigs weren't big, but they offered good sport and will provide many great meals.
Also, it was nice to spend some time w/my brother.

We then dropped the pigs off at a place that had a cooler and was able to cut and wrap the meat for us by Sunday lunch time. That meant I had time to try to fill my second tag.

That PM we got into the smaller hogs above.
We decided to make another go of it in the AM.

My brother and son decide to enjoy the morning in camp while Mary and I beat the hills.

Marty spotted pigs right off the bat, but by the time we got there they went someplace else.
Guess what? We glassed from were the pigs gave us the slip and spotted hogs not far frome where we started at. We decided to go there. When we were there, they were right on the other side of the fence. After more glassing and spotting more pigs on the move we decided to try someplace else.
Marty just caught some out of the corner of his eyes and we had to boogy to get infront of them. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.
This time it worked out. About a dozen or so hogs were there all bunched up. One split off a bit from the others and I put a bullet through it. Afer a short run, the pig went down. It wasn't the biggest in the herd, but a fine eater pig.

My brother and I were both shooting 30-06s.
Mine a Sako and my brother's and old Mossberg.
They both shot the Cor-Bon 168 Barnes TSX loads fine.
All were down w/1 shot.
I like the fact that the bullets didn't damage too much meat, and was able to put nice hole in the hogs.
This is the exit hole in the hog my brother shot.
