That’d be a good rule. Only one buck and one doe instead of two bucks.

That would be fine with me as it would have not impact on the number of deer I kill each year haha. My son did draw J11 this year and will likely settle for a doe, so we will hopefully contribute to the taking of 1 doe this year.

There was 20+ years straight I arrowed two deer in A31 in the rifle closure area of LA County. A few other Bowhunting buddies of mine had similar success.
Does the rifle closure area still exist? If so, what are the boundaries and best access points?

Yes. It’s on the LA county website…..but essentially the front range from Claremont to Pasadena.

Does anyone know how crossbows figure into that closure area? Are they considered firearms or can you use them?

Crossbows are not legal during the archery season and A31 is a specific archery hunt. You must be permanently disabled and apply for a permit from DFG to use a crossbow. Most of the rifle closure is within the A31 boundary, so if a person had a crossbow permit it would be allowed, as it’s not a listed firearm.

It used to be under their ordinance section and their game and fish section. It wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t updated. The ranger station at Little Dalton used to give the maps out…..they also have it displayed at their office

That’s the only one I’ve seen/used. But the more western ranger stations may have it???

I remember having that old map at one time. It really wasn't usable since the quality was so bad.

If no one can find the map, does one really exist? I'm all for following the law, but how hard should we hunters have to look to verify that we aren't allowed to shoot a firearm on national forest land?

Did you not see the map (link) I posted? Trust me the closure and statute is there…..you can call the F&W directly if you’d like…..there’s a few still there that I worked with. 😁

I realize this is an A31 thread, but wasn't asking about using a crossbow with an A31 tag. You can use a crossbow during rifle season so I was curious if you could use one in the "no firearms" area during D11 season. I can't find where it is specified one way or the other.

I’ve asked f&w who will enforce it
They said forest dept
I’ve asked forest dept they say la county
They know nuthin

Not surprising. When I was there, LASO wrote tickets, as did a few wardens.

I wasn’t the only bowhunter doing that. My four good buds had the same luck. However, we all decided for about 10 years we would take one doe and one buck to better help manage the archery only area. It worked, as during the mid to late 90’s the deer hunting was pretty good. It wasn’t uncommon to see 30-40 deer a day with at least 10 of them bucks (during the rut). It also helps when that season essentially ran from September through January. 😁

when is the rut.... I'm seeing mixed reports online for socal deer. anything from august/sept rut to some claiming it's in December.
