Drive the roads and learn the territory. Look for places where deer cross the roads and find where the trails go. Study maps to figure open and closed areas. Get out, hike around quietly and keep your eyes open.
Never been to A31, so cant offer anything else.

You will only get lost or stuck driving the forest roads in D11. Drive up to Lake Hughes. Stop at the Rock Inn and take a picture and have lunch. Post the picture and I will tell you where to go.

I know not everybody is willing to give out info but I’m different. I’ll point you in the right direction. Go up Hwy 5 north, turn on 138 east go couple of miles and turn on Old Ridge rte. Drive couple of miles and turn left on 7n23 or Liebre Mtn Rd. Drive about .37 mile or so and the road splits, turn left going up, you can hunt all that area but u should drive up to the top. The PCT trail runs alongside the dirt road up there. I would hike and hunt along the PCT, if it doesn’t matter to you whether a buck or doe you’ll see something, I say easily doe. Here’s a map of A31 look at the top left corner. Whether you hunt that area or not…you’re welcome…let us know how you do because it’s a long season

This is a nice place to visit and hike around but you won't find any deer. You can save yourself a full day and $200 by watching this video, probably posted 13 years ago, and say you went. The PCT trail runs alongside the dirt road up there. Just so happens I was up there yesterday, all day. We were the only one's up there. Saw one deer bolting. Saw some tracks in areas I had not seen before, saw no tracks were I seen last year. Overall, not much deer sign. Lots of acorns though, so no one going hungry.
