So there I am, sitting on the ground with the Foxpro FX5 screaming Lightning Jack bloody murder when I see movement in the distance. It's predawn and just enough light to start calling. The rancher wants the mt. lions and coyotes shot to hell so today I'm packin' a Savage 22-250 which is resting on the shooting sticks. I am head to toe Mossy Oak Brush and now hear the rustling of something big coming to the call. Safety off, I dial up the scope to see what's coming (no binocs for this job) and see small razorbacks running my way. Okay, that's cool...I'll shoot a pig when the opportunity presents itself.

Now they are getting close and I can make out five critters coming in hard. One looks to be about 200lbs. They enter an open area about 40 yards out and I get my first good look at em. Holy shiznit! These are javelina! Gotta have a tag for those in the months of Jan & Feb only in AZ so I put the safety back on and mute the Foxpro. But they keep coming, even faster now. Now I'm feeling a little bit uneasy cuz 18 yards away I have piggies with cutters shaped like staple removers flanking me on 3 sides so I stand up and give a bark. Four turn and keep moving but one stops (the big one) and snaps at me. I grunt back. It mock charges me and I grunt again. This damn thing is just staring at me! It's like he's trying to decide whether to kick my ass or not. Kinda funny when I reflect on it but at the time I was like what the _ _ _ _? Well Mr. Whiskers finally decides that even though I look like I would benefit from a thorough asskicking he's gonna go catch up with the others and off he goes, passing me within 12'.

So today I have my 2013 AZ license and javelina tag and come January I'm heading back to that spot for a rematch with my bow. I sure hope Mr. Whiskers hangs around, he was huge! I know they are skinny and hairy and it makes em look bigger than they really are but this guy was easily over 80lbs and I'd guess pushing 100lbs. How big can they get? Should be an interesting mount doncha think? Anyone eat these smelly swine?

I don't know about maximum size, i would say 60 is a good size one. They are delicious. Some of the best eating wild game out there. I don't know how they got a reputation for tasting bad but we have shot a few and they are great eating. I think proper meat care is critical.

Some of the best chile that I have made was from Javelina. Personally I like the meat, and since I just
got my tag in the mail I'm looking forward to the Feb. hunt.
Good luck and enjoy your hunt

80 lbs is about getting to be the top of the scale for Javelina. I think their closest living relative is the Hippo and lordy do they stink. Reminds me of microwaved skunk. And mean! I don't believe they're afraid of anything.

Yeah, I've seen that vid before. I think there was something wrong with that critter. So now hippos are members of the rodent family? I didn't get that memo.

I don't know much about Javelina, but I've done some researches, so I'm certainly sure that first they are not rodents, and second, their meat is pretty good. I haven't hunted them before, but I might try this coming up spring bow season. So, go get 'em Bruce

I pray I run into Mr. Whiskers again, I swear he was huge looking. Granted, this was my first close encounter with javelina so I could be wrong but all the tropy sized javelina have been taken in AZ so who knows. Maybe the area is ideal for them there. Have bow-will travel.

rodents?! hahhaha. they have these things called BOOKS..you read them and get information..hahah.

javalina alive and in full alert, look HUGE!! they puff themselves up very convincingly. you deflate one with an arrow, and walk up to it. chances are, you will be dissappointed. but dont be. they are a great arrow target. argueably the best arrow target.

you have to neatly get that scent gland off first. i have ruined plenty of javalina meat. i am not expert. next time i go, i will youtube the process first. you cant get that junk on your knife and spread it all about.

i had some Javalina tamales once. man so delicious. i never buy a tag because i cheap out. i will rethink that next time.

While Peccaries look similar to pigs, Peccaries are classified in a family of their own because of anatomical differences. They are members of the Tayassuidae Family while true pigs are members of the Suidae Family.

My Brother winters east of Phoenix. Any Javies to hunt in that area? It would be a great excuse to go visit after the first of the year.
