While Peccaries look similar to pigs, Peccaries are classified in a family of their own because of anatomical differences. They are members of the Tayassuidae Family while true pigs are members of the Suidae Family.

If they aren't pigs because they (pigs and peccaries) are separated into different Families then how can you claim they are rodents when they separate from rodents way back at the the Order level

What kinda crazy call is this guy using? I don't recognize the sound. Sure got em riled up! This is exactly how the suckers came charging in on me. Gets real exciting for this guy towards the end...almost ends up with one in his lap! LOL

It's sounds like a jackrabbit call. He's muffling the sound down with his hand to make it sound like a pig in distress. Sounds like he's huffing or grunting with his own voice too to help sell the call.

Wow, never read so much misinformation on one thread - oh well, makes for a fun read. Yep, it's a jackrabbit call, it's a called a Circe P1 Jackrabbit (but Rick's produces a unique tone). Here's the best way to prepare 'em: skin carefully - avoiding musk glans, bake in oven at 200 on a cedar plank for two hours, then slow cook the rest on bbq using same wood plank, slice thin strips against the grain, toss out javelina meat and eat the wood plank.

Mick, The old research miss-classified them as rodents, as they have many characteristics and features of rodents (anyone who reads books would know this :stir pot. Did I really just do that :smiley_doh:, :bag-on-head:.The complete evolutionary linage (as far as I am aware is not known, leaving many researchers believing they evolved from some type of rodent, while others believe they evolved from pigs. Others believe they evolved from Tapirs (related to the horse and Rino), Agoutis, Pacas (both rodents), as these are common central American mammals.

The last time I hunted Javelins, was in Mexico years ago. I managed 5 hits, 2 ran off with arrows in them while I managed to get the other 3 back to camp. I got exceptionally lucky coming across over a 100 bedded, and managed to hit 2 before they knew I was there, one about 2 feet away from me as the hillside exploded with them, and 2 at about 10 yards. Even with them running right past me, they still didn't seem to know where I was. I even managed a nice Coues buck during the same hunt. Ahh the good old days.
