Actual lead ban regulations???

I see all the lead ban stuff on dfg's site and the FAQ but no actual regulations.
Are they out yet??? I emailed DFG last week but no reply or regulations yet.
I was wondering about rabbits, is lead ok for all rabbits or just cottontails, ive seen both mentioned. I want regs in hand because the sherrifs have been getting bad the last few years in Los Padres.

I don't know if the full Mammal hunting reg books are out yet, but on Page 11 of the Big Game Guide the law is pretty clearly explained.

Bottom line, you can shoot anything with lead EXCEPT: Big Game (includes hogs), coyotes, ground squirrels, and other non-game wildlife.

You CANNOT have lead ammo and a weapon capable of firing it if you are hunting big game or non-game in the Condor Range. The specifics of this (can you have it in your truck while you're out in the field?) seem to be pretty hazy at this time. I'm still waiting for a clarification from DFG sources, but right now I don't think they're even sure how to address all of this.

I saw somewhere, possesion even in vehicle of lead ammo and gun is illegal. I went out last week and cleaned the old round out of my door pockets. thanks

The other question is what about carying 2 gun, an unleaded and a leaded for rabbits???

Refer to the last paragraph in my post, then go take a careful read of the regs.

If you are hunting big game or nongame in the condor zone, it is illegal to have lead ammo and a firearm capable of firing it in your possession. So for example, you have your 30-06 for pigs, and throw the .22 in the truck for rabbits or something. By the letter of the law, this appears to be a violation. How will the game warden handle it? I dunno. But that's what the law says.

If you have lead ammo in the vehicle, but you don't have a gun in the vehicle that shoots it, you are NOT in violation. For example, if you're out pig hunting with the 30-06 and you have a bunch of .22 ammo in the truck. Your .22 rifle is at home. You are perfectly legal. That is also clearly spelled out in the law.

It sounds more confusing than it is.

Not to turn this into a political rant, but you don't have much.

The DFG has pretty wide powers of search and seizure in general, more than regular LEOs. Not sure how that will apply in this case, but not something I would wanna be pushing up against... what a way to ruin a great day in the field, lead ban or no lead ban.

That brings up another question, can sherriff's dept enforce the lead ban or does it have to a DFG??? I get followed by the sherriffs often when out coyote calling in certain areas.

I know this is an older post but in the California hunting regulations book it says basically all game in including non-game is illegal to shoot with lead. So u have 2 use non-lead 2 shoot rabbits as well. Am I right cause I dont know all the law either, but from what I have heard u have 2 use non-lead on basically everything. I live in Kern County so it sucks...

wow, just went to my local shop and the lowest price for a non-lead for my 30-06 180 grain is $50.

ONLY BIG GAME and NON GAME are covered under the ban. You can shoot rabbits, tree squirrels, and furbearers with lead, as well as upland birds (including turkeys).

(f) Methods of take within the California condor range. Except as otherwise provided, it is unlawful to use or possess projectiles containing more than one percent lead by weight while taking or attempting to take any nongame birds or nongame mammals in those areas described in Section 3004.5, Fish and Game Code.

(1) For purposes of Section 475, a “projectile” is defined as any bullet, ball, sabot, slug, buckshot, shot, pellet or other device which is expelled from a firearm through a barrel by force.

(2) Except as otherwise provided, it is unlawful to possess any projectile containing lead in excess of the amount permitted in subsection 475(f) and a firearm capable of firing the projectile while taking or attempting to take any nongame bird or nongame mammal within the area described in subsection 475(f). The possession of a projectile containing lead in excess of the amount allowed in subsection 475(f) without possessing a firearm capable of firing the projectile is not a violation of this section.
