adequate poundage for hogs?

Hi all,

Going pig hunting next weekend at Hoss Hog Hunting and would like to bring my traditional recurve bow. I decided to try the traditional approach a few months ago and have been practicing quite a bit and feel pretty confident with it. I took some advice and purchased a lighter poundage for the "breaking in" period of trad archery by purchasing a used Bear Grizzly at #45. Will that be to light a poundage for hogs? Or is that poundage only good for squirrels? ha ha
..according to the input I have been receiving regarding the ranch, the avg shot is 10 - 20 yards.

Keep your shots short, maybe not even at 20 yards. The Trad guys I met only shoot out to 15, and their poundage is more around 50.

You'll be just fine. You don't mention your arrow setup, but if it's a standard 500-600-ish grains with a SHARP 2-blade broadhead, you're good to go. Keep your shots under 15 yards and hit 'em accurately. But you might pass on that 400-pound bruiser with the 4-inch thick armor plate.

Please post a report, I've been curious about hunting there myself.

Welcome to the trad ranks! You should be ok with 45lbs (assuming you draw it a full 28 inches) on most sows under say 200 lbs and on young boars. Try to get yourself some heavier arrows (500 grains or so) and go with simple two blade broadheads like Stingers, Zwickies, Magnus, STOS etc. No three bladers or God forbid expandables on hogs. My hog setup is a 58# recurve with 580 to 600 grain arrows, Eclipse or Stinger broadheads. Keep em low and forward!

Thanks for the input guys, now I feel more confident in the poundage. I have 125grn magnus 2 blade. My goal is to get a
nice medium sized sow for the freezer, so will more than likely pass on that big ole 400lb boar. They have treestands there so I guess I will bed practicing out of my kids treehouse this weekend.

I will let you guys now how the hunt turns out.

IMHO, keep the shots short, use sharp broadheads, pick a GOOD spot and use at least a 55lb bow. If you shoot a weiner pig around 50-75lbs you should have no problem, but if you are faced with a large boar 150-200lbs(or more) with grissle over the shoulders and most of the sweet spot you had better be a good shot with a 70lb bow.
I have hunted pigs for years with a PSE Carrera 70lb bow, goldtip arrows, 125gn thunderheads and have not had a problem taking them down. But, it is all about placement and range. I shoot dry sows in the 150-200 range and get as close as I can...

I use that. Don't expact a pass through, or even an exit wound. If your arrow is going for the vitals, it should have the momentum to do the same damage that a heavier bow would. It's borderline when it comes to mature pigs, but good luck!
