Just bring Orso! He wideled my huge pig in seconds. That monster barely fit in my 13 qt. cooler too! ;)

I just bought a Buck folding with the gut hook after my last hunt. I used to use Gerber but have to re-sharpen them after every third swipe. I used my brothers Buck last trip and the gut hook opened a full size Elk cow in five seconds with no problems or damage. They’re a little heaver to carry but are well worth it.

If you guys want to talk about speed-skinning, a couple of years ago Hronk had his pig at tejon stripped and in the cooler by the time it took me to even skin the rear legs on mine.

OK - I just got done ordering one of the Piranha knives. $29.95 which includes 13blades and I added an additional 12blades for $5. It is shipping today from Ohio.

2-3/4" blade
OAL - 6-3/4"
folding / lockblade w/ lanyard hole and pocket clip.
Easy one handed opening access.

I am with the others that like small knives. I had bought a big locking blade browning knife and I never used it. My recommendation is off the beaten path but it may be your best bang for the buck:

I use my Swiss Army knife with a lockable blade and a saw. It is compact, reasonably light and does all the other camping duties in the field. I have skinned and boned several bears with this knife. All I add is a small V groove shapener, so after going through cartlidge and along bones, I can give it a touch up.

Here a picture, it is called the "Rucksack" model. Any other model with locking blade and saw will suffice. That saw is very sharp, by the way.

Make sure you get the real deal from Victorinox. Their knife steel is very good. My hunting buddies are always surprised how sharp the knife is and remains ...

Cheers, George

Why does anyone need a gut hook? What's wrong with sticking a couple of fingers down the cavity and zzzzzzziiip? Gut hooks look like they are more trouble than they are worth. At least if they are on the back of the knife, they make it arkward. Carrying a separate hook may be an option if you need the hook, but I would shy away from a knife with an integrated hook.

I use a Twistmaster by ColdSteel to trim and cut. I use the stainless skinner for skinning the whole animal. I use the saw or tree pruners to cut the pelvis and sternum. Tree pruners also work good cutting ribs. I have used the knives to cut up 2 deer and 2 hog before they needed re-sharpening.

I second the fixed Schrade Sharpfinger. Ever since the first time I used one I loved them. It is very ergonomic and gets in where it is needed. Lately after seeing a few kitty cats Iv'e been glad to have it on my side rather than a folding knife. Ya never know. Same think with hunting pigs. Especially with a bow. I don't carry a side arm so it is my last line of quick defense. The only other knife Iv'e really like was any short bladed with a drop point. As for the gut hook I can go either way with it. It was nice when I did have one. It broke and I have got by fine with out it. The hook is very nice for the belly but also works good for the shanks. If you look for a sharpfinger your best bet is on e-bay. I just got a second one yesterday. And have a couple more bids on em for a third. I like em enough to keep stashed around. Schrade closed down in the USA. Now they are made with the Schrade name in China. Pay attenting and you will figure out the differnce. I paid a little more for the old style. There are a lot of them on there. Be patient and you won't pay more than $30.

Hey Oregoncritters,

I tried to reply to you email but it wouldn't go thru...

I received the Havels Piranha and it is really nice. The first thing I noticed is how well it fits in my hand, and of course how extremely sharp it is... Crazy sharp.

Thanks for the suggestion... It's already in my huntin' pack.

Thanks to all who replied - appreciate the input. So many choices and options - I'll probably end up collecting more than a few. For now I placed an order with Cabelas for a fixed blade, Alaskan Series Vanguard. A little pricey at $89.00, but what the hell - at least it'll last. Thanks again for all the advice/suggestion and comments.

My camera has taken a dump, I can't post any pics right now. When I get it back from the shop I'll post a pick or two.
