My hunting partner and I have probably settled on our hunt of a lifetime destination after much debate. We are thinking Africa for Big Game. Anyone been there and have some advice to share? I have heard the fenced hunts are becoming popular in Africa too and want to avoid that. A reliable outfitter reference would be very appreciated.

A good friend of mine has been a couple of times and is planning a third. I always figured it was way too expensive but it's actually not as bad as I thought.
My neighbor is also a huge African hunter (100+ animals mounted in his house). He's also caught the #2 and #4 Largemouth Bass of all time (maybe that's what's paying for those African trips). If you have anything specific I'm happy to ask either one of them for their two cents.

I hunted with Don at a pig bow hunt he put on at Larry Greves' Hogs Wild last spring near Coalinga, Ca. Some of the hunters had known Don for years and had nothing but compliments about his operation. He knows his game and really goes all out, especially in the chow department.

In South Africa (RSA) if the land is high fenced the animals belong to the land owner, thus most of the hunting in RSA is within a high fence.
I hunter the Northern Transval in '96. The areas are plenty big, except when entering you may never see the fence, the animals are real warey (sp?). It took me 8 days to take a Kudu, never did kill a bushbuck.
Another country to look at is Namibia. Good variety of plains game, good rates.
If you don't have a lot of 1st hand info contact several booking agents.

I have a Fair bit of experience in Afrcia being one of a handful of Americans to earn A PH license there in the last 20 years. Not all of South Afrcia is fenced but the law does require all private land to be fenced so that the landowner is managing his own population, not the Countries game animals. Contrary to popular belief the Landowners do not own all game on their property and many species travel over under or right through the fences all the time.
I don't think a property of fair size should be any detrement to your decision making process. Some of the properties are measured in Square miles not acres. To put this another way, would you hunt Brown bear, deer, wolf, wolverine, moose, etc. on Admirality Island, Wrangle Island or any of the islands of SE Alaska? They are all fenced by the ocean. The animals are captive and cannot escape with out risking their life. Not any different then South Africa when it comes right down to it. A Kudu may have a 3-4 square mile home range and be on a 20 square mile property. Impala may have a 1-2 square mile home range and be on a 35 square mile property, We have 100,000 total acres to hunt on! If they are born on the property and self sufficient without care or feeding by the land owner then how is it different the game on the Islands of SE Alaska?
The big difference is the quality game management taking the oldest over the hill trophies which usually have such horrible tooth wear the will die of old age before they are sport hunted. Not to mention it's a safe and inexpensive country with great people and habitat. The Northern Transvaal has more indidgenous species of big game then any other area in Africa!
I work as a PH there in April May and June each year. I still have two openings available for the first ten days of June and two spots open for the 22nd of June through the 2nd of July.
