On the drive down to Wild Hog Adventures, AS and I discussed and came up with a game plan for the weekend hunt. The name of this game plan, "Shock and Awe", we wanted to get on the board with kills right off the bat and hopefully scare the other 2 teams into submission.
The hunt:
On our way into the ranch AS and myself didn't waste anytime stopping off at the cabin and went straight into hunt mode. We split up and went our own ways, wishing each other luck and knowing that we were going to be killin. I spent most of my time hunting steep, dark canyons choked full of poison-oak. I bumped a hog right off the bat and didn't have an opportuniy to shoot so I contiuned working my way down hill. I crossed a creek and realized there was a major pig trail coming down through the middle. It seemed fresh and I decided to wait a few minutes because light was fading. A herd of pigs came running down behind me and the wind was in my favor. I was preparing to shoot because the pig trial was going to cross right in front of me but they ended up feeding away from me and didn't give me a chance to fling arrows.
Walking back towards the truck I noticed a black cow feeding a 100 yards away under an old oak tree. I through the binos up to take a closer look and realized it was a nice size boar. He was feeding up hill and in an open meadow with no cover between me and him. The ground was crunchy so I pulled my boots off and dropped all my gear, just then I heard AS on the radio wanting a ride. AS was going to have to wait because my hunting wasn't over. I took my time and sloooowly crepted forward checking the wind and making sure the hog had his head down. I got to 82 yards, then 71, 45, and then finally got to 24 yards. The hog turned broadside and gave me a perfect shot. I shot and watched as the pig ran off and came right back to where he was feeding and he seemed unhurt. Just then he started to trot up hill and away from me and I decided to shoot again. As I shot the pig turned right and ran across the field, I didn't know if I had shot him the second time because of the angle and light was fading. As soon as he came to the edge of the field he sat down like a dog and didn't move. I was asking myself did I shoot him, or did I miss? I sat there in my socks for ten minutes trying to figure out what to do. I gathered my stuff put my shoes on and hiked back to the truck to go retreive AS.
After finding AS all bloody
we decided to go back and look for my hog. Right away AS found blood and we followed it for a 150 yards or so. We decided it was dark and we'd come 1st thing in the morning to look for it. At 1st light we caught up to the blood trail and bumped the hog twice within 200 yards. The hog was hurt bad but he didn't want to die so we decided we'd give hime a few more hours to take a dirt nap and we would return later. In the afternoon the hog had only made it a couple more hundred yards before he expired with some help. He was one tough boar and will make a nice euro mount.
The next 2 days AS and I went searching for pigs and I were able to put on a few stalks on good size boars. I managed to shoot and miss at 25 yards on a nice boar w/tusks and have him run right at me and managed to shoot from the hip and miss again at 6 feet. I need to practice those 6 foot shots because you never know. The place was crawling with hogs and everyone enjoyed the trash talking, the drinks and the good times!
All in all, Team NORCAL WON!
