Tonights hunt-

My buddy Scott and I decided to try out our water hole on the property tonight after football practice. We load the quads and are on the road at 6:30. We arrive at the gate entrance at 6:45 and get situated. After loading the 4 wheelers with gear we are finally making it down the dusty dirt trail that leads to the stand. I decided to stop early and walk in the rest of the way not wanting to spook any critters.

Cautiously walking through the clear cut and watching the ground before every step. I look up and in front of me in the clear cut about 60 yards is 1,2,5,8,9 they keep coming single file out of the ceder trees, then 10,11....14,...18....finally the last hog, number 22 makes it through the clearing. We are to late to sit in the stand, but maybe can make a stalk and take a nice pig with our archery equipment. Scott and I decide to stay on the trail and keep as quite and as low as we can. Stepping around branches, and rocks, tip toeing through the woods. In my mind ever sound I make seems like a bomb is going off. Than a plane was flying over and the engines roar was very loud and we decided to use it to our advantage as it was drowning out our sounds. After sneaking about 40 yards, I grab Scott and point in the direction of the water hole. There were all the hogs and at only 22 yards it semmed like we would both bag a russian boar with our Easton arrows and 125 grain Muzzzy broad heads. From our position we have one clear shot through the big ceders, then four hogs step in perfect positon.

With our arrows nock, releases ready, Scott and I are in the process of drawing our compound bows. BOOOOOOM the plane that was flying above us back fires and the pigs heads ALL come straight up from eating and drinking. In a split second they are out of a clear shot and moving to our left at a fast walk. We lose sight but can hear them stepping on the oak leaves about 50 yards behind the watering hole. In disbelief our stalk was ruined by the back fire of a plane.

Ten minutes go by and Scott walks in the direction of the hogs and kicks them up were we last heard them. They went on top of a flat and bedded down, probably wondering what in the world just happened.

Will be back chasing them Saturday and hopefully can post some pictures this time. Would be out tomorrow but the football game kind of spoils all the fun.

Great story, and good hunt!

You'll be on 'em next time!

Man, though... that comment about hitting the road at 6:30 and being at the gate by 6:45 really got the "poor-me" going... The very thought of being only fifteen minutes from my hunting area... I wish! Brings back memories of the good ol' days back in NC. Now it's more like three or four hours to my hunting spots.

OK... no more whining from me.

Keep us posted on your return trip.
