Effective today, Monday, September 24, 2007, American Airlines has announced an official policy that will no longer allow carrying firearms as part of checked baggage on international travel. The official language says "Effective with tickets purchased on/after September 24, 2007, American Airlines will no longer accept firearms in checked baggage to/from any European or Asian destination (except for military/government personnel with proper documentation)."

Why is it due to the other countries request?

This rule may be in effect, but I flew with two rifles on American in May, from San Francisco to Johannesburg. We had no problems at all on the way over, transferring from American in London over to British for the leg to SA. On the way home, it all went smoothly from Jo'burg to London, but American wouldn't accept our rifles from British Airways, so they agreed that British would allow us to fly to San Francisco at no extra cost. They worked it out among themselves.

As we discuss the potential split of the "Hot Topics, Politics and Conservation" forum, could the prioritization of conservation efforts be more about political agendas than genuine environmental concern? How do we ensure that conservation remains a grassroots movement rather than a pawn in the political game?
