richracer1, FHL doesn't get real cold temp wise, it just reminds me of Fort Bragg and the bone chillen cold there. Lots of freezin azz rain. If you've got a camper with a decent heater you'll be okay but tent camping in that weather is miserable IMHO. When I got my Dodge it came with heated seats even though I didn't want them and I thought I'd never use them. The next Prez Day holiday trip to FHL it spit cold rain for days up there and I was so glad to have them heated seats.

XD, send me your new PH# or call me. If you're bunking at the Hacienda save me spot please if you have room.

So, it looks like we will be hunting up there after all. Hopefully we'll get the two elk tags filled so we can do some important hunting--hogs!

How about a roll call of people going to be there that weekend? I'm in plus three.

XD and Jesse (bubba) are out. I'm still in for NY weekend

Ko1, we have an annual Presidents Day FHL hunt in Feb too every year. Plan on that 3 day weekend. I was going to try and get together a January MLK weekend hunt but I'll be at the SHOT show in Vegas that weekend. That's another good 3 day weekend to hit FHL.

Now is the time to hit FHL

So are they keeping a lot of the areas closed because of the Elk hunt that starts tomorrow?

Elk hunt may be why 16, 9, 24, 25 and 10/13 are closed. Dayum. 13E, 29 and 6 & 7 can be decent.

Still could quail, predator and bunny hunt too.

Hunter Liggett web page says that 13E is open for shotgun/muzzleloader/bow. Is that just for Elk or can we hunt hogs there too? I've seen hogs in 13E down by the watering hole or that concrete water basin. I believe it's in the southern corner of the zone.

Woops, my goof 13E is open and 29. Both good hog spots. As long as they have it open you can hunt it. The elk hunt areas are closed off to the general hunters. If the elk hunters tag out they open them up so check with the check in window at lunch each day if you can or anytime you drive by there. You never know what might open up.

13E holds hogs... so does 7, and sometimes 2 and 6. I won't be making it up there till tomorrow night to help with our buddies elk. But I plan on hunting quail after we get the elk done. Not sure which area i'll be in yet, but there's quail in all of them.

Hey Westy- Been a long time. Roads are nasty. I was there the past 4 days and it was fine on Saturday and then Sunday came and one friend pushed it a bit to far and got stuck. Had to leave his truck over night. We ended up getting it out Monday am with a F250 4x4 with locked axles, monstor tires and a big fat winch. All is good now. We saw 2 hogs at different times but no shots and another set of friends missed a herd of 8 on Saturday. Oh well next time. Weather report shows cloudy tomorrow and showers on Friday and cloudy Sat and Sun. After the rain on Sunday the roads did not dry out much on Monday and then it rained again Monday night. Very slick on Tuesday. We did not drive in very far at all. Had to walk most of the area.
Good luck and be safe.

Be carefull Rick.the road will be slick and muddy this time of the year at the base. Hope they fix Sam Jones gate from Jolon road or open River road again. if not , it will be a long drive to 27 or 23.
Dont be a macho taking bull rock road going to Sam Jones, you will be stuck for sure. it's a good choice if you use the shot gun.

good luck

I like the walk in only areas. I've only been over there a few times and all but one time we were in the 13E and 29 because I don't have a 4x4 vehicle. Hell I don't own a truck. I think I've walked every inch of 13E. I stayed to the hills in 29 because there were some guys bird hunting down in the river bed.

It was still a great time! Wish we could have pulled up on those hogs or at least found the one on the side of the ridge that was jumped. :hog chewing:
